Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: CNN’s Bakari Sellers Tussles With David Urban: Gates…Cohen…Manafort…’How Many Felons Do You Want’ Around Trump?

Thursday night on CNN, Bakari Sellers battled former Donald Trump campaign advisor David Urban over the number of felons connected with the president.

In a tense clash on Anderson Cooper: 360, Sellers asked Urban how he might react if a Democrat were in the oval office and connected with people like Paul Manafort, Michael Cohen, and George Papodopoulos.

“To my Republican friends, like David and many others, the only thing I can ask you is; What happens if this was a President Obama or a President Clinton?” Sellers said. “I mean, you would be literally pulling your hair out on TV, calling them anything but a child of God to have all of these individuals around him which are felons.”

Later in the conversation, Urban noted that Roger Stone has not yet been convicted. Sellers promptly cited several Trump-connected figures who either have been convicted, or cut plea deals.

“Michael Cohen is a felon,” Sellers said. “Rick Gates is a felon. George Papadopoulos is a felon. I mean, how many felons do you want around him? Six or seven? What’s enough?”

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: What Is 6G Technology? Trump Wants Something That Doesn’t Really Exist Yet

On Thursday, POTUS wrote about what he perceives to be the necessary next step for technology in the United States. In a tweet, Trump said that he wanted -quot;5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible.-quot; So for anyone who”s been wondering what 6G technology is, you should know you”re not alone.

First things first: per The Washington Post, 5G technology is only beginning to be in the works for most data networks, and 6G technology isn”t even a fully-fleshed concept yet. Obviously, it follows that 5G technology would come after 4G technology (which is what data networks provide now), and 6G would eventually come after 5G but that doesn”t mean it”s a real thing yet.

In a pair of tweets on Thursday, Trump wrote in full,

I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible. It is far more powerful, faster, and smarter than the current standard. American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind. There is no reason that we should be lagging behind on something that is so obviously the future. I want the United States to win through competition, not by blocking out currently more advanced technologies. We must always be the leader in everything we do, especially when it comes to the very exciting world of technology!

More to come…

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump’s kids just got some really bad news

We’re supposedly just a week away from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report about Donald Trump’s crime spree, and we’ll see if that ends up being the case. Even as we wait to see how it plays out, and what it means for Trump’s kids, they just got some rather bad news of their own.

Even as Robert Mueller has largely operated in secret, we’ve seen a pattern in which he’s farmed out ancillary criminal cases to federal prosectors at the SDNY. One theory has been that when Mueller takes his big swing at Donald Trump, he’ll have SDNY take parallel swings at Trump’s kids. The point would be to wound Trump and leave him playing defense on far too many fronts at once, thus unable to properly fight back against any of it, and left with no choice but to fold.

There are some observers who think – for no apparent reason – that Robert Mueller and the Feds will somehow decide to simply leave Trump’s kids out of it, and ignore their crimes. Surely, Trump’s kids are under this delusional premise to at least some extent. But if they want a dose of reality, they need look no further than what just happened to one of their father’s big adversaries.

Mexican drug kingpin El Chapo was recently convicted for his crimes in a U.S. court. Not only does this mean that he’s toast, it means he’s no longer in a position to protect those around him. Accordingly, according to CBS News, El Chapo’s sons were indicted and charged today for crimes related to their father’s criminal empire. This shouldn’t shock anyone; it’s simply how prosecutors tend to structure these things.

That brings us back to the criminal case against Donald Trump. The minute he’s ousted – or simply too cornered and crippled to be able to protect anyone around him – there is every reason to expect that prosecutors will round up his kids as well. It’s simply how these things work. If Mueller really is dropping the hammer on Trump next week, it’ll open the door for indictments and criminal charges against the rest of his crime family.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: Trump urges US telecoms firms to step up 5G work

US President Donald Trump called on the country’s telecommunications companies to boost their work to build faster 5G wireless communications networks, saying they were lagging and at risk of being left behind by other countries’ efforts, Reuters reports.

“American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind,” Trump said in a pair of tweets.

“I want the United States to win through competition, not by blocking out currently more advanced technologies,” he added, although he did not explain what blockage he was referring to. Representatives for the White House could not be immediately reached for comment.

The Trump administration has been seeking ways to speed the deployment of faster wireless communications systems that could help a number of industries.

Last year, the Federal Communications Commission moved to eliminate regulatory barriers to 5G deployment by capping local fees and requiring faster application reviews.

The Republican president’s administration has also been warning other countries against adopting 5G systems from Chinese telecommunications company Huawei Technologies, citing security concerns.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: Sullivan: Trump’s emergency wall money ‘probably legal’

“Probably legal” – That’s U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan’s opinion on the emergency President Trump declared to redirect money to the southern border. But Sullivan is worried about the projects the money will be diverted from.

“I would have concerns, particularly if it’s coming out of Alaska military construction, which is not only important for our state,” Sullivan told reporters in Juneau Thursday. “It’s really important for the national security of our country.”

In his annual address to the state Legislature, Sullivan highlighted military spending in Alaska as a reason to hope the state’s economy is finally on the rise.

“In just the past three and a half years, Sen. Murkowski, Congressman Young and I have been able to secure over $1.3 billion in military construction for our state, including the F-35s to Eielson and a new missile field at Fort Greely,” Sullivan said, to ringing applause.

Sullivan did not mention in his speech that some of that money could be sent instead to the southern border, because when Trump declared the emergency, the White House announced his intention take $3.6 billion from military construction accounts.

At a press conference after his address, a reporter asked Sullivan about Trump’s emergency declaration.

“It’s probably legal but I don’t think it was needed,” Sullivan said, referring to other money Trump can spend without an emergency declaration.

Sullivan called the situation at the border a “crisis.”

I’ve been supportive of the president’s request for robust funding for barriers, fences, the wall, border security – however you want to describe it.” Sullivan said.

He said he’s inquired about the Alaska projects and he’s drafting a letter to the White House.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski addressed the Legislature Tuesday. She expressed reservations about the emergency declaration, and about some of the budget cuts Gov. Mike Dunleavy is proposing. Sullivan told a reporter he wasn’t going to weigh in on the governor’s budget.

He did, though, highlight the advantage of retaining state expenditures that leverage more federal money, like for certain transportation projects.

“We’re close to 700 million coming to the state of Alaska from federal highway dollars,” Sullivan said. “It was a really good bill that Don Young and Senator Murkowski and I got done for the state. I think the match there is 10 percent. You would probably think that’s a good investment by the state.”

Sullivan recounted for the Legislature many of the goals he and the rest of the Congressional delegation achieved, particularly when it comes to resource development. He calls the annual address the most important speech he gives all year.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: New Jersey Proposal Could Keep President Trump Off 2020 Presidential Ballot

Follow CBSPHILLY Facebook  | Twitter

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — President Donald Trump could miss out on being on the 2020 ballot in New Jersey if he doesn’t disclose his tax returns under a bill now advancing.

The Democratic-led state Senate passed legislation Thursday inspired by the Republican president’s failure to disclose his tax returns.

The measure requires presidential and vice presidential candidates to release five years of federal tax returns to appear on the state’s ballot.

Trump broke with decades of tradition by refusing to release his income tax filings during his 2016 campaign. He said it was because he is being audited.

Philadelphia City Councilman Proposes Term Limits For Council Members

Democrats have used the issue to raise questions about what might be in the documents.

The bill goes to the Democratic-led Assembly. If the measure is passes there, it would head to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy.

Republican Gov. Chris Christie previously vetoed the legislation.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: Trump pledges to expand opportunity for every race

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is pledging to expand opportunity for Americans of every race, religion and creed as he commemorates Black History Month.

Speaking to hundreds Thursday at a White House reception, Trump boasted about the economy and said the unemployment rate for African-Americans is at its “lowest ever.”

Black unemployment did reach a low, 5.9 per cent, in May 2018. But that figure changes monthly and had increased to 6.8 per cent by January.

Trump also touted passage of a criminal justice reform bill in December. He says the nation’s sentencing laws disproportionally “harm African-American communities far, far greater than anybody else.”

Katherine Toney, one of the first inmates released through the bill’s passage, thanked Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner for their efforts as the crowd applauded in approval.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: ‘Under Construction’ Wall Footage Tweeted By Trump Was Shot Five Months Ago

President Trump, in the midst of the his national emergency declaration and continuing funding over his proposed wall, sent a tweet Wednesday in which he posted a time-lapse video of what looked like a border wall under construction.

Along with this, Trump posted on Twitter Wednesday that “we have just built this powerful Wall in New Mexico. Completed on January 30, 2019 – 47 days ahead of schedule! Many miles more now under construction!” On Thursday, he quoted the previous tweet and quoted, in all caps, “THE WALL IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION RIGHT NOW!” It’s part of a shift in Trump’s messaging, from talk of building the wall to “finishing” the wall.

The problem was, according to a report, the footage was filmed last year.

According to Task And Purpose, a website that covers news important to the military and national security, the footage posted by Trump was actually shot last year.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: Hey … Trump tweeted about Smollett; Is he going to tweet about that white supremacist the FBI arrested too?

Here’s a really strange (well, not that strange) case of false equivalence from Glenn Kessler, who writes the Washington Post’s Fact-Checker column.

As Twitchy reported, President Trump tweeted earlier Thursday about the Jussie Smollett case, obviously offended that Smollett had faked a hate crime and tried to pin the blame on Trump supporters shouting, “This is MAGA country!” — which, incidentally, is what triggered so many people to suspect there was something off about Smollett’s story.

Kessler’s now wondering if Trump is going to tweet about U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Christopher Paul Hasson, a self-proclaimed white supremacist with a cache of weapons and a hit list including MSNBC and CNN journalists who was arrested Friday by the FBI.

Why would that be interesting? Smollett actually pulled off his crime and did it in part to smear Trump supporters, whom he hates. Hasson, thank goodness, was arrested before he could hurt anyone. But why would Kessler expect Trump to tweet about a white supremacist and potential terrorist? His connection to that story is … what now?

We know what Kessler’s getting at — we mean, come on, how transparent could you be — but whataboutism really doesn’t work with these two incomparable situations.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: George Will: Republicans who abide Trump’s trashing of the Constitution should be expelled from public life

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — America’s most improbably popular governor, a Republican beginning his second term in perhaps the bluest state, resembles a beer keg with an attitude. Stocky and blunt, Larry Hogan, whose job approval is in the high 70s, has won twice in the state with the highest percentage of African-Americans of any state outside the Deep South. In 2016, Maryland voted more emphatically for Hillary Clinton — by 26 percentage points — than all but three other states. In 2018, Hogan was re-elected receiving a majority of women’s votes, and 28 percent of the African-American vote while running against a former head of the NAACP. Hogan won while almost 50 percent of Marylanders were saying they would vote against all Republicans in order to express contempt for Donald Trump. So, he won against a huge blue wave in a deep blue state.

But, then, Hogan had ended the “rain tax,” which was known as a “storm water remediation fee” until he rebranded it. It forced certain counties to tax everyone, sometimes based on the amount of “impervious surfaces” on their property. All the great and good in Maryland defended this as environmentally virtuous (supposedly helping the Chesapeake Bay). However, all but one member of the Legislature, which had veto-proof Democratic majorities in both houses, voted not to terminate their political careers by continuing to tax rain.

Because in 2016 Hogan was early in saying that he would neither endorse Trump nor attend the convention that nominated him nor vote for him. And because Hogan has voiced barely disguised disgust about the president’s comportment. And because Hogan’s father set an example of principled insubordination. And because he, Hogan, is term limited and hence has little to lose other than sleep, happiness and friends. For all these reasons, he is being importuned to challenge the president in Republican primaries. He says he is “listening” and has “not said no.”

He does, however, have a day job he is reluctant to neglect. And he soon will become chair of the National Governors Association. So, he clearly is not eager to mount a losing challenge — which it surely would be — just to unfurl the tattered flag of recognizable Republicanism. Opposing any incumbent president is not a day at the beach, and campaigning against today’s uniquely smarmy incumbent would be especially disagreeable. Hogan has, however, undergone, while governor, six rounds of chemotherapy (24 hours a day, five days a week, times six, spanning 18 weeks) to defeat an advanced and aggressive cancer (non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma), so has endured something almost as unpleasant as Donald Trump.

Furthermore, his father, a former FBI agent and a Maryland congressman on the House Judiciary Committee in 1974, was the only Republican to vote for all three articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon. Probably for this reason he lost the 1974 Republican nomination for governor.

It is unlikely that Hogan will gratify those who are offering to hold his coat while he brawls with Trump. Still, this town on the Chesapeake Bay will remain known as the incubator of something else germane to today’s discontents.

In 1786, in response to a dispute between Virginia and Maryland over rights of navigation and commerce on the bay, Virginia’s Legislature asked all the states to send delegates here to a convention to consider how conflicts about interstate commerce could be handled under the Articles of Confederation. Only 12 men from five states attended, but two of them were prodigiously talented, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. The meeting decided that there should be (in the words of Hamilton’s report to Congress) a conclave “at Philadelphia on the second Monday in May next” to consider measures to make the Articles “adequate to the exigencies of the Union.” The result was the Constitution.

Today, in the U.S. Capitol, 28.3 miles west of where the Annapolis meeting occurred (in a tavern, long gone), a majority of congressional Republicans seem poised to support Trump’s evisceration of the Constitution’s architecture of checks and balances. By opposing a binding resolution disapproving the president’s declaration of an emergency, they would approve Congress’ acquiescence in the loss of its core power, that of controlling spending. These Republicans raise two questions: Why is there a Congress? And why are such Republicans receiving salaries?

Every Republican who supports the president in this trashing of the Constitution whose creation began here thereby violates his or her sworn oath to defend it and to “bear true faith and allegiance” to it. Voters should expel all of them from .

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Steve Bannon’s revenge

Steve Bannon, who hired the same lawyer as former Trump administration figures (Reince Priebus, Sean Spicer, Don McGahn) who have been chatting it up with investigators and/or reporters, was not only a major reason Trump pulled of his big 2016 coup, but also the chattiest staffer in Michael Wolff’s fiery (but not entirely true) book, Fire and Fury.

The gossipy tell-all flared into the American consciousness thirteen months ago because Steve Bannon wouldn’t shut up. Without Bannon, there would be no book, at least not a best-seller. And while Wolff has a deserved reputation for letting his imagination run free, Bannon’s quotes went undisputed. The most acidic musings were spit at “Jarvanka,” the team of Jared Kushner and Ivanka, as Bannon detailed the power battles waged between the godforsaken entities.

Among Bannon’s angry emissions, a few things stand out. First, Bannon is a firestarter, not a loyalist. He burned every bridge to Trump, clashed egos with him and got brutally dumped, lost his billionaire backing and his media megaphone, then swiftly took his brand of right-wing hatred to Europe in a horrifyingly successful reboot. All that, and it’s believed he still advises Trump. He certainly doesn’t have anything good to say about Kushner, and in light of the huge revelations about Qatar’s help with Kushner’s $1.8 billion Manhattan real estate bungle and Saudi nuclear power ties now being investigated in the House, Trump is probably getting a big dose of “throw him to the wolves.”

That may matter more than what he’s giving to investigators, because there is no indication that he has anything material on Kushner. But he’s valuable either way. Driving a wedge between Trump and Kushner only gets easier as Kushner’s bumbling amorality becomes more of a drag on an embattled administration. And while Bannon may not have direct evidence of Kushner’s apparent willingness to put American interests at risk to save himself, he’ll give everything he has to avoid personal destruction (again).

Bannon knows how the sausage is made, and likely devoted a lot of time and energy to digging up dirt on Kushner and his contacts while he was around. That’s always valuable to someone like Mueller; and the stakes are presumably higher now, considering the most recent and highly disturbing Qatar and Saudi Arabia revelations – the ones that don’t involve murdered Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Steve Bannon is vile, but he’s shrewd and vindictive. If he can help bring Kushner down while taking minimal shrapnel, he will. And Bannon won’t particularly care if he sandbags his old boss in the process as long as he survives to destroy another country.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan Doesn’t Plan to Challenge Trump in a Primary. But He Could Change His Mind

WASHINGTON -mdash; Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said Thursday that he’s not launching a primary challenge against President Donald Trump unless the president’s political standing within his own party weakens dramatically.

Hogan, who was elected to his second term last fall, has emerged as the new best hope of a small group of so-called Never Trump Republicans now seeking a prominent GOP official to fight Trump for his party’s presidential nomination in 2020. In a Thursday interview with The Associated Press, the 62-year-old Republican raised serious concerns about Trump’s leadership but said he had no interest in a “kamikaze mission.”

“My goal is not to just make the incumbent president lose in the general election. I’m not going to do that,” Hogan said. “If they’re looking for someone just to be a spoiler or to throw myself on a grenade to help someone else, that’s not me. Somebody else might be motivated that way. But I’ve got a state to run.”

Hogan’s position is consistent with a handful of prominent Republican Trump critics, including former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who have lashed out at the substance and style of the Trump presidency but have been unwilling to challenge Trump so long as he remains overwhelmingly popular within his own party. Roughly 8 in 10 Republicans approve of Trump’s job performance, though his standing among all voters has hovered at or below 40 percent for most of his presidency.

The one Republican exception, so far, is former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, a 73-year-old who has been out of office for more than two decades and who served as the vice presidential nominee on the Libertarian ticket in 2016. Weld launched a Republican exploratory committee earlier in the week.

While Hogan declared he was not “actively” forming a primary bid of his own, he left open the possibility should Trump’s standing change. He pointed to the upcoming release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation as a possible catalyst.

“I don’t have the inside scoop on what it’s going to say,” Hogan said. “But if there was damaging information, if … some serious charges come out or it becomes worse than it is today, and he took a hit in the polls, then I think all bets are off.”

Hogan, along with most of the nation’s governors, was set to meet with Trump in Washington this weekend for a gathering of the National Governors Association.

The meeting “should be interesting,” Hogan said with a chuckle, indicating he would tell Trump directly, if asked, that he was not ruling out a primary challenge.

Hogan will likely accept an invitation to appear in the key early voting state of New Hampshire once Maryland’s legislative session is over later in the spring, an aide confirmed. The Republican governor noted that he has been meeting with donors along with other Republicans encouraging him to take on Trump.

Pressed on a timeline for a potential run should Trump’s situation change, Hogan said that “most successful launches are late summer or in the fall.”

Even if he doesn’t run, he vowed to be a vocal Trump critic when circumstances called for it.

“There are very few Republicans willing to speak out,” he said. “And now I’m willing.”

Primary challengers to incumbent presidents have never been successful at stealing the nomination in the modern era, but embarrassing intraparty contests have proved to be the making of one-term leaders, seeding weaknesses that were later exploited by a general-election rival.

Pat Buchanan’s Republican campaign against President George H.W. Bush in 1992 focused in part on highlighting Bush’s broken pledge not to raise taxes, a vulnerability that dogged Bush throughout the campaign. In a show of party unity, Buchanan was awarded the opening-night keynote at that year’s GOP convention. He delivered a “culture war” speech that Bush loyalists believed contributed to his loss.

Trump’s campaign has taken extraordinary steps in cementing control over the Republican National Committee and the broader nomination process as it seeks to minimize the risk of any potential challenger doing the same to the president. That state-by-state effort has included weighing in on local party races and the convention delegate selection process. The campaign is also closely monitoring discussions in some states, including South Carolina, to do away with their 2020 Republican primary contests entirely.

“I’ve never seen anything like it, and I’ve been around a long time,” Hogan said, seizing in particularly on calls to cancel the South Carolina primary. “It’s undemocratic.”

He continued: “Why go to these great lengths unless they’re really worried that something might happen?”

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: “Very bad news for Trump” – expert says Robert Mueller’s report is about to be devastating

It’s been nearly twenty-four hours since multiple major news outlets reported that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is preparing to issue his report about Donald Trump as soon as next week. There has been a lot of hand wringing over this, as it’s caught everyone by surprise, and no one is sure what to make of it. But one expert with some Special Counsel experience says the whole thing is about to be devastating for Trump.

The current Special Counsel regulations were drafted back in the nineties by Neal Katyal, who has since gone on to become a regular MSNBC commentator. In the wake of the news about Robert Mueller supposedly issuing his report next week, Katyal has written an in depth piece about what it’ll mean for Donald Trump. His summation is this: “if Mueller reports next week, very bad news for Trump.” So why is that?

Katyal spells out that Robert Mueller’s report could simply be a summation of Donald Trump’s crimes, designed to serve as a roadmap for House Democrats to carry out public hearings and impeachment, and for prosecutors such as SDNY to carry out criminal cases against everyone involved. Katyal agrees with Palmer Report’s position that, due to overwhelming public pressure and interest, there is no way that new Attorney General William Barr can simply stick Mueller’s report in a drawer, or release a dishonestly edited version of it, and get away with it.

The bottom line is that Robert Mueller’s report – whenever it arrives – is going to mark the beginning of the end of Donald Trump. It’ll set off a thousand flashing red lights in all directions, and a tsunami of criminal charges and indictments coming from every relevant prosecutor out there. Trump might want to enjoy these last days of relative calm while he still can.

It’s looking more and more like Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation is finally reaching an end. The regulations under which he is operating require Mueller to write and submit a final, confidential report to the attorney general. Who, in turn, must then decide when and how much of the report to release to Congress and the public. No one outside of the Justice Department knows what will be in the report, which  makes this the perfect to set ground rules regarding how people should engage this material, regardless of their political affiliations or view of the L’Affaire Russe scandal. Today, Susan Hennessey, Quinta Jurecic, Benjamin Wittes and I detailed what, we believe, those ground rules should be. In the latest edition of the Lawfare Podcast Shorts, you can listen to that article in-full, read by one of the authors, Susan Hennessey.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: ‘I am ready for a new Cuban Missile Crisis if you want one’: Putin threatens Trump with a return to the Cold War confrontation that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war

Putin is ready for Cuban Missile-style crisis if Trump is foolish enough to want it

Said his missiles could reach the US faster that theirs could hit Moscow

Comes after he hit out at America over its withdrawal from key arms control pact

Warned Russia will target weapons at US should it deploy new missiles in Europe

The 66-year-old also said Russia will deploy a new hypersonic missile for its navy

Putin made remarks during his annual state of the nation address this morning

By JULIAN ROBINSON and SARA MALM

21 February 2019

Vladimir Putin has said that Russia is militarily ready for a Cuban Missile-style crisis – if Donald Trump is is ‘foolish’ enough to want one – and that his missiles could reach the US faster that theirs could hit Moscow.

Putin has said he does not want an arms race with the United States, but that he would have no choice but to act if Washington deployed new missiles in Europe, some of which he says would be able to strike Moscow within ten to 12 minutes.

The Cuban Missile Crisis erupted in 1962 when Moscow responded to a U.S. missile deployment in Turkey by sending ballistic missiles to Cuba, sparking a standoff that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.

More than five decades on, tensions are rising again over Russian fears that the United States might deploy intermediate-range nuclear missiles in Europe as a landmark Cold war-era arms control treaty unravels.

Putin said his naval response to such a move would mean Russia could strike the United States faster than U.S. missiles deployed in Europe could hit Moscow because the flight time would be shorter.

‘It (the calculation) would not be in their favor, at least as things stand today. That’s for sure.’ said Putin.

Relations between Moscow and Washington were strained, he added, but the tensions were not comparable to those of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The Rest…HERE

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: This Week: Wilbur Ross Gets Called Out By A Trump Appointee For Faulty Financial Report

The Office of Government Ethics on Friday told Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross that it would not certify the secretary’s annual financial disclosure because, essentially, Ross hadn’t told the truth.

After submitting the required annual filing claiming that, among other things, he’d divested from his stock in BankUnited Inc. in early 2017, Ross submitted another filing claiming that, actually, he’d only divested from the stock in October 2018. As a result, the annual filing contained an error, one that the Trump appointee running the Office of Government Ethics apparently thought was worth broadcasting publicly, though the stock in question was only worth a few thousand dollars. CNN noted how unusual the public rejection was.

Whether the Secretary knowingly submitted false documents in the past is unclear — that would be a crime, and Ross has said it was a clerical error. But this is hardly his first stock slip-up and it’s difficult at this point to give him the benefit of the doubt.

This week provided the Trump administration, distilled: As government scientists from a range of agencies have found man-made climate change to be an existential threat, the President is reportedly assembling a “Presidential Committee on Climate Security” to question those very findings.

Prior government reports on the threat of climate change, according to an NSC document related to the effort obtained by The Washington Post, “have not undergone a rigorous independent and adversarial scientific peer review to examine the certainties and uncertainties of climate science, as well as implications for national security.”

Of course, the government’s studies do go through peer review. That’s why, in bulk, they paint such a clear picture of the threat of deadly emissions. Who knows what a “rigorous[,] independent and adversarial” scientific peer review means in this context.

The man spearheading the White House effort, per the Post, is National Security Council senior director William Happer, who said in 2014 that “the demonization of carbon dioxide is just like the demonization of the poor Jews under Hitler.”

We turn to the President’s businesses: The Trump Organization has dropped a long-hyped plan to build two new lines of hotels, Scion and American Idea, due to “a climate where everything will be used against us,” according to Eric Trump.

Maine’s former governor Paul LePage and his staff were revealed to have spent $22,000 of taxpayers’ money at Trump’s hotel in Washington, D.C. during his presidency. Maine taxpayers could’ve known that a lot sooner, but, for some mysterious reason, two state newspapers’ public records requests were never fulfilled when LePage was in charge.

LePage once called a judge an “imbecile” after the judge cited Maine taxpayers’ payments to Trump in the ongoing Emoluments Clause lawsuit against the President. In response to the recent reports actually accounting for those tax dollars, the governor changed his tone. He simultaneously called the papers “fiction” and said: “If we paid $1,100 for a hotel room in one night, shame on me because I wasn’t aware of it.”

Last but not least: The Trump inaugural committee has been subpoenaed by New Jersey’s attorney general. I’m sure it’ll turn out fine.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: Judge lashes out, silences Trump adviser Roger Stone after latest defiance

By Sarah N. Lynch and Mark Hosenball | Reuters

WASHINGTON – A visibly angry judge on Thursday ordered President Donald Trump’s former political adviser Roger Stone to stop speaking publicly about U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s criminal case against him or else he will be sent to jail pending trial.

In a tense court hearing on Thursday, U.S. Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said that Stone’s apology and explanations for why he posted a photo of her next to the image of the crosshairs of a gun on his Instagram account were not credible.

“Thank you, but the apology rings quite hollow,” she told Stone.

“What all of this means, Mr. Stone, is that any violation of this order will be a basis for revoking your bond and detaining you pending trial. So I want to be clear – today I gave you a second chance. But this is not baseball. There will not be a third chance.”

Stone has pleaded not guilty to charges of making false statements to Congress, obstruction and witness tampering as part of Mueller’s investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election. Mueller is also investigating possible coordination between the Trump campaign and Moscow officials.

Trump denies collusion and Russia denies U.S. allegations it interfered to undermine the American democratic process.

Jackson ordered Stone to appear in court after he posted an image on his Instagram account earlier this week with the crosshairs image next to her photo and a message that railed against both Mueller and the judge.

The image appeared just days after Jackson had imposed a narrow media gag order in the case.

Stone later took the image down and apologized, but afterwards he gave an interview on conspiracy website Infowars defending the post.

At Thursday’s hearing, Stone took the stand and pleaded with Jackson to accept his apology.

“I abused the order,” Stone said. “I am kicking myself over my own stupidity.”

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: Trump is again using old videos to claim his border wall is ‘under construction

President Donald Trump tweeted out a time-lapse video on Thursday exclaiming that his border wall is “under construction right now.” The big problem is that the footage he’s passing off as new is actually repair work to existing structures undertaken five months ago.

The president originally shared the footage on Wednesday.

Again, despite the president’s suggestion, this is not a new section of the wall at all. It’s restoration work and part of the $73.3 million Santa Theresa Project Border Wall Replacement Project.

The work is being undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Trump signed off on it himself when he first took office in January 2017.

The New York Times reported last month that no new miles of border barriers had been constructed under the Trump administration at all.

One thing Trump did get right, is that the replacement on the 20-mile length of barriers shown in the clip did finish up late January.

However, the president’s attempt to pass of repair work as progress on his politically contentious border wall not only raised confusion online but garnered a response from USACE officials, who politely clarified that the video did not show ongoing construction.

“The fence segment was constructed and funded under the authorities of DHS/CBP with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers providing contracting oversight for the construction through our interagency support mission,” a USACE spokeswoman told military publication Task -amp; Purpose. “The video, which was filmed in Sept. 2018, has the USACE logo on it because it was produced by USACE.”

In a further comment, public affairs director for the Army Corps of Engineers confirmed that the “construction” was “a replacement project.”

“I’ve been in this division for 12 years,” he said, “and we were doing border wall replacement work back then.”

It’s not the first time that the president has tried this trick to pass off repair work as progress on his as-yet-unrealized campaign promise. He used photos of reconstructed portions of existing wall in the same way back in March 2018.

Then, as now, the president was called out by the fact-checkers and the opposition while many of his supporters went on retweet his fake news uncritically.

H/T Task -amp; Purpose

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: Trump Wants ‘5G’ and ‘Even 6G’ Wireless Technology ‘As Soon As Possible.’ What’s He Talking About?

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he wants U.S. companies to more quickly implement what’s called 5G wireless technology, the latest and greatest tech when it comes to mobile broadband.

-ldquo;I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible,-rdquo; tweeted Trump, who went on to imply the U.S. was falling behind due to policies preventing the adoption of wireless technology from companies abroad. While 6G doesn’t yet exist, 5G is just starting to be deployed around the U.S. and elsewhere.

Here’s what to know about 5G technology and its status in the U.S.

What’s 5G, and What Does Trump Mean By 6G?

5G is simply the name given to the next generation in wireless cellular technology. Like the jump from 3G to 4G, 5G will bring with it considerably faster speeds, lower latency, and increased support for more devices. Compared to 4G LTE, the wireless cell technology used in smartphones today, 5G promises speeds up to 100 times faster and a response time up to 20 times faster.

5G promises to unleash a wave of new technologies that could benefit from its blazing-fast speeds and low latency. Smartphone owners will be able to stream games lag-free and watch 4K content with zero buffering. Autonomous vehicles could use 5G-rsquo;s lower latency to respond quickly to changes in traffic and communicate with other connected equipment. And since 5G will be capable of helping low-power devices communicate with one another as coverage grows over the next decade, it could enable all sorts of new smart home tech, too.

As for this 6G technology Trump is talking about? While that will most likely be the name given to the next logical step in the advancement of cellular technology, no such standard has been defined, and any talk of G6 is purely theoretical at this point -mdash; we’re only just starting to deploy 5G, after all. That isn-rsquo;t to say it-rsquo;s not being thought of; research on the merits and potential uses for 6G (also known as “6Genesis”) is being conducted at Finland-rsquo;s University of Oulu, for instance. Still, with an estimated debut in 2030, don-rsquo;t hold your breath.

Unfortunately, you probably can-rsquo;t take advantage of any 5G speeds yet because there are so few 5G networks and devices available for consumers. Right now, Verizon has a version of 5G providing homes with high-speed wireless connectivity, though it-rsquo;s only available in a handful of cities. The company announced shortly after Trump’s tweets that it’s planning to expand mobile 5G coverage to over 30 cities this year. AT-amp;T has mobile 5G service in a variety of cities as well, though users can only take advantage of it with a 5G hotspot at the moment. T-Mobile and Sprint will roll out 5G service sometime this year, they say. Some other services are advertised as a form of 5G, but that’s pretty much just marketing hype.

What’s Taking 5G So Long?

For a wireless provider to build a 5G network, it needs access to a wide array of wireless spectrum, the use of which is largely government-regulated. Since 5G relies on both very high and very low wireless frequencies, carriers are gearing up to cover the gamut. They’re spending billions on purchasing the rights to these frequencies either through buying companies that already holding the rights, or by bidding on spectrum bands auctioned off by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in an effort to speed up 5G deployement. “By making more spectrum available, promoting the deployment of wireless infrastructure, and modernizing our regulations-mdash;the three components of the FCC-rsquo;s 5G FAST plan-mdash;we-rsquo;ll ensure that American consumers reap the substantial benefits that will come from the next generation of wireless connectivity,” said FCC Chairman Ajit Pai in a Jan. 24 statement after concluding the first spectrum auction for 5G wireless service. Still, spectrum is a limited resource, and it’s taking time and money for wireless companies to get the spectrum they need for 5G.

There’s also the problem of equipment. Trump-rsquo;s suggestion the U.S. is -ldquo;blocking out currently more advanced technology-rdquo; isn’t exactly wrong. Two Chinese companies, Huawei and ZTE, manufacture 5G wireless equipment that American companies like Verizon or AT-amp;T could use to build out their 5G networks. But security official and other experts have warned that the companies’ equipment could provide the Chinese government with a way to spy on American citizens and companies. In fact, through the recent signing of the National Defense Authorization Act, Trump himself has explicitly banned government use of telecommunications equipment from companies like Huawei and ZTE. The U.S. government is even pressuring allies to block Chinese-made 5G equipment, though some, like Germany, aren’t listening. In addition, a recently introduced bipartisan bill is seeking to prevent Huawei and ZTE from supplying U.S. wireless carriers with equipment.

-ldquo;Chinese telecommunications firms like Huawei represent a growing threat to American national security,-rdquo; said Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) who introduced the Telecommunications Denial Order Enforcement Act. -ldquo;As state-directed enterprises, they ultimately report to the Chinese Communist Party and will be employed where and whenever possible to undermine American interests and those of our allies.-rdquo;

All this is to say most Americans could be waiting longer for true 5G service to arrive in their neck of the woods.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Roger Stone takes the witness stand during hearing, crashes and burns

Roger J. Stone, Jr. mewled and whimpered in front of Judge Amy Berman Jackson today in order to keep his freedom. His apologizing was profuse as he expressed his own personal disappointment in his conduct. “I recognize that I let the court down. I let you down. I let myself down. I let my family down. I let my attorneys down. I can only say I’m sorry. It was a momentary lapse in judgment. Perhaps I talk too much,” wrote Darren Samuelsohn, a reporter with Politico who was watching the hearing in real time. Stone expressed his stress over the situation and used it as an excuse for his horrifying Instagram post of the judge’s picture with crosshairs near to her head. Roger did everything but lick Judge Jackson’s face.

Welcome to the new world of Roger Stone. Suddenly the visions of orange jumpsuits, and prison forever and ever, are dancing through his head. Somehow his lawyers have managed to make him understand the kind of trouble he is in. But if Manafort’s situation wasn’t enough, then what is?
The judge was incredulous about Stone’s ability to control his “volunteers” and his choices. This is his MO. He is happy to target individuals when they can’t lock him up. Now he is petrified. Judge Jackson asked him, “You had a choice?” Stone agreed that he chose the photo. “It was an error,” he whined. Then he promptly couldn’t recall the names of the “volunteers” who had access to his phone, whereby the Instagram post was made. Wow.

So the party of “Personal Responsibility” can just whine and cry and everyone will feel sorry for them and give them a cookie and a pat on the head, and send them on their toxic way. No. No. No. No.

This is a travesty. Even the judge agreed Stone’s behavior is indefensible. But the great thing is his lawyers are so horrible, they put this fool on the stand. His spin and lies and disrespecting fabulousness imperils him greatly. And he still thinks he can squirm his oily way out of this. Talk about enough rope to hang himself. Roger Stone will get a complete gag order and he will continue to post through his naughty “volunteers” and take interviews. So let’s consult the Table of Drops. He’s a goner.

Palmer Report: Michael Cohen goes for the triple play against Donald Trump

Last night we learned that Special Counsel Robert Mueller will supposedly be issuing his final report on Donald Trump as soon as next week, and in what doesn’t seem like a coincidence, we learned that Michael Cohen is definitely testifying against Trump next week. Cohen had been stalling, seemingly with the approval of House Democrats, but now he’s ready to reveal all. It turns out he’s going for the triple play.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings announced last night that Michael Cohen will publicly testify in front of the television cameras next Wednesday. Then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi revealed that Cohen will also be testifying before the House Intelligence Committee next week. But that’s not the entire story.

It turns out Michael Cohen will testify privately before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, then publicly before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, then privately before the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday. To be clear, public testimony is largely for the benefit of educating the public, while private testimony generally involves the discussion of ongoing criminal cases and/or secret information and is for the benefit of pointing congressional investigators in the right direction. So why is it a big deal that Cohen is doing all three committees in rapid fashion?

For the past few weeks it’s been clear that someone – either Robert Mueller, the SDNY, or both – has been encouraging Michael Cohen to stall his scheduled congressional testimony. Whenever Cohen cited his shoulder issues, or the threats Donald Trump was making against his family, House Democrats seemed just fine with the postponements. Now we know why: the investigation has reached a point where Cohen can truly dish on things, and so he’s going all-out.
