1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump’s most horrifying scandal yet

One of my biggest worries about Donald Trump being elected wasn’t so much what he would do as president (though that has shown to be a very valid concern with each passing day), but what he wouldn’t do: that he would sleep in and watch TV while terrible things happened to the country and people he put in positions of power would abuse that power recklessly.

While Trump spends 60% of his day in uncharted “executive time,” horrific crimes against humanity are being committed with meager coverage from the “unfair media.” One is the administration’s appalling response to Hurricane Maria, where 3,057 American citizens were left to die. The other is his reprehensible border policy, which goes far beyond his deranged demand for a wall. Yes, the administration encouraged separating parents from their children at the border and no, they weren’t “just obeying orders” from some previous administration.

Despite Judge Dana Sabraw ordering an end to family separation last summer, reports of what is happening at the southern border get more draconian by the day. As per a report from the Texas Civil Rights Project, Customs and Border Protection agents are now deciding the fate of young asylum seekers on their own terms. One father was accused of being a gang member with no evidence, another was accused of forging his daughter’s birth certificate. Despite DNA testing that proved she was his daughter, they were separated for a month.

Sabraw ruled that families may be separated if the parent is deemed a danger to their child. As there are no judges or child welfare specialists involved, the decision is up to the agency alone – something that agents have clearly chosen to exploit. Donald Trump and Stephen Miller may be proud avatars of white nationalism, but they’re hardly the only ones to blame, as we see children die in American custody and bigger detention centers being built. There could be any number of dangerous bigots infiltrating the ranks of CBP and ICE – emboldened by the administration’s hateful rhetoric.

The American Civil Liberties Union has plans to address this abuse in their lawsuit to reunite families. Meanwhile, we are long overdue for an intensive congressional investigation into the leadership of CBP and ICE. Then, the conversation needs to open to better means of providing legal counsel to asylum seekers. For these agencies to say they don’t have the resources to track down all of the children whose lives they ruined is simply not an excuse.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: The real reason Sarah Huckabee Sanders didn’t resign when she was supposed to

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has resumed making dishonest and idiotic defenses of Donald Trump’s crimes and lies, prompting a number of Palmer Report readers to ask why she’s still on the job. CBS News reported last summer that she and her Deputy Raj Shah would resign by the end of the year. Shah is now gone, but Sanders is rather oddly still there.

We recently learned that Special Counsel Robert Mueller interviewed Sarah Huckabee Sanders about the obstruction of justice antics she’d been carrying out from her briefing podium, and that right around that timeframe, she largely stopped doing press briefings. She still pops up in interviews to defend Trump from time to time, but she seems to be choosing her words carefully and speaking rather generically these days. It’s fairly clear that she knows she’s facing legal trouble – so again, why is she still on the job?

If you’ve been made aware that you’re in legal trouble for having conspired with your boss to commit a crime, and your boss is the President of the United States, you only have two options. The smart move is to cut a plea deal against your boss, and seek no prison time in exchange for your cooperation. The dumb move is to remain on the job and remain allied with your boss, under the delusion that he cares enough about you to pardon you in the end.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders is, as we’ve all seen time and again, rather dumb. But we’d imagine Robert Mueller filled her in on her precarious legal situation in the kind of simple terms that even she can understand. So the question is this. Is she still on the job because Mueller advised her to go back and spy on Donald Trump? Or is she still on the job because she’s truly stupid enough to think she’s getting pardoned? Take your pick.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Robert Mueller’s new filing against Paul Manafort implicates a certain Republican Congressman

Special Counsel Robert Mueller dropped an eight hundred page bomb on Paul Manafort today, exposing the details of essentially every crime Manafort has ever committed in his life. There’s no mention of Donald Trump, but as we’ve explained, that’s a good thing for the Resistance, and a bad thing for Trump. However, a certain Republican politician does get mentioned, and not in a good way.

One of Mueller’s attachments exposes Paul Manafort’s circa-2013 strategy to illegally lobby the United States government to support the Kremlin-controlled Yanukovich regime in Ukraine. It reveals that Manafort and his associates managed to convince the “Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee” to get on board, and to apparently go so far as to frame the Kremlin puppet government as if it were “pro-western”:

This doesn’t necessarily incriminate the Chairman, but it certainly does implicate the Chairman as having had a relationship with Paul Manafort that was – at the least – criminal on Manafort’s end. The question of course is whose name is blacked out. For historical reference, Republican Congressman Ed Royce became the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on January 3rd, 2013. However, the name “Ed Royce” is too short to take up the amount of space that’s been blacked out, so it’s not him, unless there are additional words blacked out next to his name. Interestingly, Royce announced his retirement at the start of 2018, and is no longer in Congress.

There is another possibility here. It’s long been widely reported that Robert Mueller is investigating Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher’s extensive ties to the Kremlin in general, and to the Trump-Russia election conspiracy in particular. Rohrabacher’s name would pretty much exactly fit within the blacked out space above. The catch is that he wasn’t the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; he was the Chairman of one of its subcommittees. Rohrabacher sought reelection in 2018 but lost. Intriguingly, Ed Royce reportedly stopped Rohrabacher from going to Russia in 2017.

Whoever it is, it’s now more clear than ever that Robert Mueller’s investigation has gone far beyond the Trump-Russia 2016 election conspiracy, and has reached members of Congress who may have had some criminal connection to the primary Trump-Russia players. This comes after a filing last year which asserted that a still-unnamed 2016 candidate for Congress sought a copy of the emails that Russian hackers stole from the DNC and gave to WikiLeaks.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Everyone piles on after Donald Trump quotes some guy no one has even heard of

Donald Trump’s fragile ego and narcissistic underpinnings have long motivated him to seek out praise for himself, no matter the respectability of the source, and then trumpet that praise as if it were legitimate. For instance, Trump will quote pretty much anyone on Fox News who says nice things about him. But even some of Trump’s longtime pundit cheerleaders have started to sour on him.

If you want evidence of just how desperate Donald Trump has grown and how far he’s fallen when it comes to finding sycophants he can quote, he ended up posting this tweet on Saturday night: “‘There’s not one shred of evidence that this president’s done anything Constitutionally (or anything else) wrong.’ Graham Ledger. Thank you Graham, so true!”

This prompted just about everyone on Twitter to cry out at once: Who is Graham Ledger? That doesn’t even sound like a real name. Has Lindsey Graham gone into the witness protection program? Is the “Graham Ledger” the name of a fake small town newspaper? To give you an idea of how thoroughly the internet ended up laughing at Donald Trump for quoting this guy, the name “Graham Ledger” ended up trending on Twitter, simply from everyone piling on.

If you’re wondering, Graham Ledger is the host of the “The Daily Ledger” on the One America News Network, a comparatively obscure cable news channel that’s so embarrassingly and dishonestly pro-Trump, it makes Fox News look legitimate in comparison. That’s right, Donald Trump has now sunk to watching positive coverage of himself on the OANN channel, because it’s the only place he can reliably still find it.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: The real reason the New York District Attorney is finally going after Donald Trump

On Friday, New York County District Attorney Cyrus Vance let it be known that he was bringing unpardonable state-level criminal charges against Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort. He was sending a clear signal that he’s planning to charge every criminal in Trump’s orbit, including Trump and his kids. But wait a minute, wasn’t Vance the guy who let Trump’s kids off the hook a few years back?

Yes it is, as a matter of fact. Back in late 2017, the New Yorker exposed that Cyrus Vance was in position to criminally indict Donald Trump Jr and Ivanka Trump in 2012, and that he dropped the whole thing after Donald Trump’s attorney made a sizable donation to Vance’s campaign. Vance also let Harvey Weinstein off the hook after a similar donation. Then in late 2018, the New York Daily News reported that the FBI was investigating whether this counted as Vance taking an illegal bribe.

At the time, Palmer Report wrote that “At the least, this new federal investigation into Vance could place additional pressure on him to try to right his own wrong by bringing Ivanka and Don Jr to justice.” Sure enough, now Vance is making a point of bringing criminal charges against Paul Manafort, even though Manafort is already going to prison for life. It sure looks like Vance is trying to keep the legal heat off himself by targeting Trump’s people as quickly and loudly as he can.

We have no way of knowing if Cyrus Vance is still under FBI investigation. Has he been cleared? Is the probe still ongoing? Will he be indicted and removed? We don’t know. But we do know that Vance is now very much acting like a guy who thinks he has to do something to show that he’s not corruptly in the pocket of wealthy criminals like Donald Trump. Even if Vance hasn’t seen the light, he may have simply decided to try to cover his tracks. In any case, Vance is now making a point of targeting Trump’s people. We’re sure the New York Attorney General won’t allow Vance to let Trump’s people off the hook this time.

Michael Novakhov – SharedNewsLinks℠: “I really thought it was thunder.” Boeing 767 crashes in Texas with three on board

ANAHUAC, TX (WFXL) — According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Atlas Air Flight 3591, a Boeing 767 cargo plane, crashed into the Trinity Bay near Anahuac, TX, 30 miles outside of Houston’s airport.

The plane appears to have been flying for Amazon Prime Air, according to flight tracking site FlightRadar24.

The FAA says the crash happened just before 12:45 p.m. local time Saturday as the plane was flying from Miami to Houston.

“I really thought it was thunder. Then my son said ‘I just heard a plane go down.’ I said what do you mean you just saw a plane do down? He’s like ‘Mom, it went straight down. Let’s go to the water and see’.” said crash witness Candace Dockens Chavez.

“It didn’t make sense cause like, that’s what you would see in a movie. It never happens. Nobody ever sees that,” said witness Daniel Chavez.

Three crew members were on board the plane, says the FAA in a Tweet.

Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne says his agency is responding to eyewitness and an FAA confirmation that a large commercial plane crashed into Trinity Bay.

Hawthorne told sister station KFDM that from the appearance of the wreckage, he doesn’t believe “anyone” could have survived.

There have been no official confirmation as to the condition of the three crew members on board as the search and rescue operations continue.

Editor’s Note: This story was updated with witness quotes and the appearance of the wreckage to Sheriff Hawthorne.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: The terrible news for Donald Trump in Robert Mueller’s new Paul Manafort court filing

Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s sentencing memo against Paul Manafort was publicly released today in redacted form, and with all the attachments, it totaled more than eight hundred pages. There’s terrible news in there for Donald Trump, but you have to read between the lines to find it.

When we say “read between the lines” we’re not talking about the voluminous black redaction bars, though some of them are intriguing in their own right. Instead, we’re talking about something that isn’t in Mueller’s court filing at all: any mention of the Donald Trump campaign colluding with the Russian government to alter the outcome of the election. Trump’s fans are seeing this as a victory, and the pessimists in the Resistance are wringing their hands over it. But that’s not how anything works.

There is Trump-Russia election collusion. We know this based solely on the numerous and systemic instances of Trump-Russia election collusion that have been reported by so many different major media outlets. Donald Trump’s delusions aside, it’s not all merely “fake news.” It’s just a matter of how Mueller is going to make that evidence public.

Let’s say that Robert Mueller is currently boxed in by new Attorney General William Barr, and he doesn’t think his final report about Donald Trump will properly see the light of day. In such case, Mueller would need to try to put as much of the evidence as possible against Donald Trump into documents such as court filings against Paul Manafort, which Barr would have a more difficult time stopping, because such filings are court-mandated.

The total lack of Trump-Russia collusion in the Paul Manafort filing is a clear sign that Robert Mueller is highly confident about his ability to publicly expose the evidence against Donald Trump through more powerful means. It’s frustrating for the public to wait a bit longer, but it’s now clear that Mueller feels he has an unobstructed path to exposing Trump’s crimes.

Michael Novakhov – SharedNewsLinks℠: Israel’s AG to announce this week whether he will file charges against Netanyahu – Israel Election 2019

Michael_Novakhov
shared this story
.

Israel’s Attorney General Avichai Mendelblit is expected to publish his decision this week on whether to file charges against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Mendelblit hopes to release the decision before the end of the week, about 40 days prior to the April 9 election, but it may be delayed to the beginning of next week.

The attorney general is expected to announce the indictment of Netanyahu on the basis of accepting bribes in Case 4000. Netanyahu made decisions benefiting Shaul Elovitch, the controlling shareholder of Bezeq, Israel’s largest telecommunications firm, in exchange for positive coverage in Elovitch’s website, Walla News.

>> Read more: No to Netanyahu: Israel’s attorney general made the right decision | Analysis ■ Bibi bombshells explained: Your guide to all the Netanyahu cases ■ A panicked Netanyahu is bracing for the inevitable | Analysis

Netanyahu is also expected to be indicted for fraud and breach of trust in Case 1000, in which he is accused of accepting lavish gifts from Israeli-American entertainment magnate Arnon Milchan.

Mendelblit has yet to determine whether to also try Netanyahu in Case 2000, involving bribes from Yedioth Ahronoth publisher Noni Mozes. Mozes and Netanyahu were recorded by former Netanyahu aide Ari Harow for discussing a deal in which critical coverage of Netanyahu would be reduced in Mozes’ newspaper in exchange for limiting rival newspaper Israel Hayom.

Last week, Mendelblit convened meetings with Israel’s State Prosecutor Shai Nitzan and Tel Aviv District Attorney for Taxation and Economics Liat Ben Ari, who recommend indicting the prime minister in Case 2000 as well. Mendelblit has yet to reveal his position in these meetings, and is still unclear on his intentions to file charges.

In the event that Mendelblit will close Case 2000, he will issue a detailed explanation for his decision, and will also publish the state prosecutor’s position on the matter. It is thus far unclear on which rationale Mendelblit would decide to close the case, as none of the legal reasons (lack of evidence, lack of blame, or lack of public interest) are at play.

In addition, Mendelblit would be pressured to explain why he canceled Harow’s decision to turn state’s evidence. According to the arrangement, in compensation for the information Harow provided, Harow will plead guilty to breach of trust for selling a fictitious consulting company to circumvent conflict-of-interest regulations. He will also carry out six months of community service in addition to paying a 700 thousand shekels (193,800 dollars) fine.

Either way, closing Case 2000 against Netanyahu doesn’t necessarily mean closing the case against Mozes. The attorney general is expected to close Sara Netanyahu’s case in Case 4000.

The decision is expected to be published on Thursday. On Wednesday, Netanyahu will be meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Mendelblit will probably emphasize in his announcement to the public that his decision is not final, as to avoid claims that he is hurting or influencing the outcome of the elections. In meetings conducted by Mendelblit, he has consulted with upwards of 20 senior legal officials who have taken a deep dive into the evidence of the cases. Investigations have carried on for about three years. Mendelblit rejected Netanyahu’s lawyers’ requests to delay publicizing the decision until after the elections, on the grounds of “the principal of equality in the eyes of the law and the public’s right to know about important legal decisions such as these.”

There is no preventing the announcement of intentions to indict a public figure pending a hearing, even if the hearing itself will take place after the election, Mendelblit wrote in his decision. “Not a small number of charges have been filed against elected officials before elections over the years, most of which have been before local elections that have taken place fairly recently.”

As an example, he used the case of then-Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, who publicized his intentions to file charges against Tzachi Hanegbi on Election Night of 2006. Hanegbi’s hearing took place only after.

Russia – Mother Jones: Mueller Asks Judge to Throw the Book at Manafort

In a lengthy sentencing memo released Saturday, Special Counsel Robert Mueller recommended that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort face around 20 years in prison for committing “an array of felonies for over a decade.”

Prosecutors asked US District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson to throw the book at Manafort, whose crimes, they say, “remarkably, went unabated even after his indictment.” Their conclusions, while expected, are devastating for Manafort, who blew his chance for a reduced sentence by violating a cooperation agreement with Mueller by constantly lying to prosecutors. Mueller’s team has contended that Manafort misled them in hopes of winning a pardon from President Donald Trump.

“Manafort chose repeatedly and knowingly to violate the law—whether the laws proscribed garden-variety crimes such as tax fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, and bank fraud, or more esoteric laws that he nevertheless was intimately familiar with, such as the Foreign Agents Registration Act,” the memo says. “His criminal actions were bold, some of which were committed while under a spotlight due to his work as the campaign chairman and, later, while he was on bail from this Court.”

Prosecutors are asking Jackson to adhere to sentencing guidelines that call for a prison term of 17 to 21 years for the 69-year old defendant. “Manafort presents many aggravating sentencing factors and no warranted mitigating factors,” the memo states, adding, “Upon release from jail, Manafort presents a grave risk of recidivism.” A federal judge in Virginia is set to sentence Manafort on March 8 for separate tax and bank fraud charges on which he was convicted in August.

In arguing that he had violated his cooperation deal, prosecutors outlined contacts during and after the 2016 presidential campaign between Manafort and his longtime Ukrainian associate Konstan Kilimnik. According to earlier filings, the FBI has concluded that Kilimnik associated with the Russian intelligence unit that hacked and leaked Democratic emails in 2016 in a bid to help elect Trump. In a hearing earlier this month, prosecutors revealed that during a secretive August 2, 2016 meeting in New York, Manafort shared detailed Trump campaign polling data with Kilmnik and talked with him about a Kremlin-backed peace plan for Ukraine that is believed to have involved the US dropping sanctions imposed on Russia in 2014. Manafort and Kilimnik continued to discuss the plan throughout 2018, according to a transcript of that hearing.

Manafort’s sentencing memo does not elaborate on those contacts, which prosecutors have previously said went to the heart of their investigation into Trump campaign contacts with Russia. Further details on Manfort’s dealings with Kilimnik— a Russian intelligence associate who is also linked to Oleg Deripaska, an aluminum magnate close to Russian President Vladimir Putin—and how much Trump and other campaign officials knew about them may still emerge in a final report Mueller is likely to send to Attorney General William Barr in the coming weeks.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Robert Mueller just dropped an 800 page bomb

Special Counsel Robert Mueller filed his sentencing memo against Paul Manafort under seal last night, and today the judge instructed him to publicly release a redacted version. Sure enough, it’s just been released, and all told, it’s a whopping eight hundred pages long.

This explains why it took more than twelve hours past the filing deadline to get the whole thing properly redacted for public release. The primary filing document is just a couple dozen pages; the attachments make up the bulk of the biblical-length tome. We’re just now starting to make our way through the filing, which has plenty of black redaction bars, but also plenty of non-redacted material. Here’s what stands out so far.

This document makes clear just how thoroughly Robert Mueller and his team went through every stage of Paul Manafort’s criminal life in order to bust him as thoroughly as possible. Voluminous details are included about Manafort’s illegal lobbying efforts, both foreign and domestic, dating back several years before he went to work for Donald Trump. Manafort’s crimes while running the Trump campaign are also spelled out in great detail.

We’ll see what details end up standing out. But for now, the upshot is that Robert Mueller has managed to penetrate every last inch of Paul Manafort’s life of crime. Why does this matter? If Mueller has done this to a secondary target like Manafort, he’s surely managed to do the same to Donald Trump. When Mueller does take his big swing at Trump, it’s going to expose – in devastating detail – every crime Trump has ever committed.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (198 sites): Palmer Report: Here comes Michael Cohen’s revenge on Donald Trump

Michael Cohen, former fixer and covfefe for “President” Donald Trump, will appear publicly before the House Oversight Committee on February 27, 2019. Better get the popcorn and the toaster ready, because based on what is on the list of topics and what Cohen is now disclosing about “irregularities” (appearing to be insurance claims) at the Trump Organization, it will be “Toast” Trump that Cohen is fixin’. In the February 20, 2019, letter to Cohen, Chairman Elijah Cummings sets forth a wide range of topics:

• the President’s debts and payments relating to efforts to influence the 2016 election;
• the President’s compliance with financial disclosure requirements;
• the President’s compliance with campaign finance laws;
• the President’s compliance with tax laws;
• the President’s potential and actual conflicts of interest;
• the President’s business practices;
• the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.;
• the accuracy of the President’s public statements;
• potentially fraudulent or inappropriate practices by the Trump Foundation; and
• public efforts by the President and his attorney to intimidate Mr. Cohen or others not to testify.

That is a comprehensive list and, provided Cohen has knowledge on these topics, it is significant to the fate of Donald Trump and his family and Trump Organization. It is possible that the strategy of Cohen here is to provide assistance to the prosecutors as the law provides potential reduction of his sentence if he can help in a substantial way.

On Friday, as noted, Michael Cohen was reported to have provided prosecutors with evidence of insurance transactions that were not appropriate, and likely signals where Cohen is headed with his testimony. Cohen has top notch Chicago criminal defense attorney Michael Monico representing him now. Michael and Michael likely have mapped out the best course for Cohen, and from the sounds of it, Trump Toast will be the latest Trump branded product to be going down.

Politics, Economy, World News from 100k+ sources: For anti-human trafficking crusader Ivanka Trump, Robert Kraft could make things awkward

As a senior White House advisor, Ivanka Trump has made fighting forced human labor and sex trafficking one of her signature initiatives.

In an op-ed in the Washington Post in November, President Trump’s daughter called human trafficking, whose victims reportedly number 25 million children and adults worldwide, an “evil.”

Ivanka Trump also wrote that all governments have “a moral obligation” to stop these “heinous crimes.” She touted the “strong action” taken by President Trump to combat human trafficking and explained how he was bringing “the full force” of the U.S. government to this issue. She said her father did so by signing an executive order directing federal law enforcement “to prioritize dismantling the criminal organizations behind forced labor, sex trafficking and involuntary servitude.”

Fast forward to Friday when Ivanka Trump’s claims that the Trump administration cares about human trafficking faced scrutiny.

That’s because authorities in Florida announced that one of President Trump’s longtime friends, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, had been charged in a sprawling human-trafficking and prostitution investigation.

Police said the billionaire Kraft, 77, was charged with two counts of soliciting another to commit prostitution, stemming from two separate visits to the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter, Florida, the Daily Beast reported. Authorities said a video obtained as evidence showed the Patriots owner in a sex act at the spa.

While the solicitation charges themselves are misdemeanors and Kraft was among two dozen male customers implicated in the probe, the Daily Beast and other outlets said the charges are part of a larger crackdown on five massage parlors in two counties in Florida where women were used for suspected human trafficking and prostitution.

Sheriff William Snyder in Martin County, Florida, where one of the day spas is located, said at a press conference Friday that the women were victims, coming to the United States from China under the guise of having legitimate jobs in the day spas, the Palm Beach Post reported. The women instead were expected to perform sex acts on men who visited the storefront spas, and were confined to the businesses, eating and sleeping there when they were not working.

Multiple men who visited the Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Palm Beach County told police they paid the spa’s manager, Lei Wang, to have women perform sex acts on them, the Palm Beach Post reported. Wang and the spa’s owner, Hua Zhang, have both been arrested in connection with the case.

Under state and federal law, human trafficking is defined as “soliciting, recruiting, harboring, transporting or otherwise obtaining another person to exploit him or her for labor, domestic servitude or sexual exploitation,” the Palm Beach Post said.

Kraft, whose Tom Brady-led Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl three weeks ago, pushed back against the solicitation allegations in a statement released by a spokesman, Politico reported.

“We categorically deny that Mr. Kraft engaged in any illegal activity,” the statement read. “Because it is a judicial matter, we will not be commenting further.”

But the charges against Kraft already are making things awkward for Ivanka Trump and her father.  Across social media and cable news, people questioned Ivanka Trump and the president’s commitment to fight human trafficking.

That’s in part because the president has been accused of sexual misconduct himself and has previously rallied to support political allies accused of sexual assault or harassment, including Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Alabama senatorial candidate Roy Moore.

This week, the president also found his administration embroiled in the ongoing scandal involving Jeffrey Epstein, the billionaire hedge-fund manager who is a Palm Beach, Florida, neighbor of the president.

Epstein faced accusations in 2008 of sexually abusing more than 30 underaged girls. But a judge found this week that he benefited from a non-prosecution deal with federal prosecutors that allowed him to plead guilty to a much less serious charge related to prostitution. The deal, which was concealed from the victims, was facilitated by then-Miami U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta, who is now Trump’s secretary of labor.

With regard to Kraft, President Trump on Friday only expressed sadness to hear that his friend had been charged in connection with the Florida prostitution case. The president also left open the possibility that he would be willing to defend his friend’s claims of innocence.

“It’s very sad. I was very surprised to see it,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “He’s proclaimed his innocence totally, but I’m very surprised to see it.”

Trump also shrugged off the judge’s ruling that Acosta and other prosecutors broke the law by arranging the Epstein deal, saying, “I really don’t know too much about it. I know he’s done a great job as labor secretary, and that seems like a long time ago.”

Ivanka Trump on Friday didn’t address the allegations against Kraft or the judge’s ruling on Acosta. Her only tweet Friday pertained to another of her signature issues, workforce development.

Kraft’s arrest puts his friendship with Donald Trump and his family under scrutiny. The Palm Beach Daily News reported that the men’s friendship goes back at least 20 years. Both men have long maintained second homes in Palm Beach and first met while carrying out “philanthropic work together in Palm Beach.”

Kraft was a guest at Trump’s lavish wedding reception with Melania Trump at Mar-a-Lago in 2005, and the two men forged a “stronger friendship” after Myra Kraft, Robert Kraft’s wife of nearly 50 years, died of cancer in 2011, the Palm Beach Daily News said.

“When Myra died, Melania and Donald came up to the funeral in our synagogue, then they came for memorial week to visit with me,” Kraft said in an interview. “Then he called me once a week for the whole year, the most depressing year of my life when I was down and out. He called me every week to see how I was doing, invited me to things, tried to lift my spirits. He was one of five or six people that were like that. I remember that.”

Trump’s concern for his grieving friend may explain why Kraft, a Democrat, supported Trump’s presidential run by donating $1 million, according to reports.

Kraft also was a guest at a pre-inauguration dinner for Trump and attended a dinner the president hosted at his Mar-a-Lago resort for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife in February 2017.
