1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Democrats tip off that Michael Cohen’s testimony will be even more devastating to Donald Trump than we thought

Here’s the thing about Wednesday’s public House Oversight Committee testimony from Michael Cohen: much of it will focus on matters that Cohen already discussed privately on Tuesday with the Senate Intelligence Committee. We’ve spent the past day watching for clues from the members of that committee, and there are two that stand out rather remarkably.

The first clue came from Democratic Senator Mark Warner, the ranking member on the Senate Intel Committee. After he finished listening to Michael Cohen’s private testimony, he made this remark to a gang of reporters: “When this investigation started, I said it may be the most important thing that I’m involved in in my public life in the Senate. Nothing I have heard today dissuades me from that view.”

In other words, the mild mannered Warner is taking the already-high expectations for Michael Cohen’s public testimony, and making a point of ramping those expectations up even further. That’s significant, because it means that Warner sees Cohen’s accusations (and cooroborating evidence) against Donald Trump as being the real deal.

The second clue is that not a single Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee bothered to try to discredit Michael Cohen after the hearing, or to leak the specific accusations in the hope of disputing them. In other words, even Donald Trump’s allies on the committee appear to think Cohen’s evidence and testimony are so damning, they’re afraid to even try to defend Trump on it. Get your popcorn ready.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Donald Trump | The Guardian: Trump predicts ‘awesome’ future for North Korea before Vietnam summit with Kim Jong-un – live

The North Korean leader is set to meet with the US president in Hanoi to discuss denuclearisation

Here are the president’s tweets since he landed in Vietnam 12 hours ago. In them, Trump has praised Vietnam and thanked its people for the “great reception” he has received, as well as suggesting North Korea could thrive in the same way as Vietnam “if it would denuclearize”, writing North Korea’s “potential is AWESOME”.

Just arrived in Vietnam. Thank you to all of the people for the great reception in Hanoi. Tremendous crowds, and so much love!

Vietnam is thriving like few places on earth. North Korea would be the same, and very quickly, if it would denuclearize. The potential is AWESOME, a great opportunity, like almost none other in history, for my friend Kim Jong Un. We will know fairly soon – Very Interesting!

The Democrats should stop talking about what I should do with North Korea and ask themselves instead why they didn’t do “it” during eight years of the Obama Administration?

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the second summit between US president Donald Trump and North Korean chairman Kim Jong-un. The summit, which will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam over the next two days, follows the pair’s historic meeting in Singapore in June last year.

Donald Trump hailed the first summit as a great success, repeatedly saying that his discussions with Kim had averted a war between the two countries. Trump has also claimed that Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the North Korean leader.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Lawfare – Hard National Security Choices: The Lawfare Podcast: Culper Partners Rule of Law Series: Eric Holder

In this second episode of the special Culper Partners Rule of Law Series, David Kris and Nates Jones, the founders of the Culper Partners consulting firm, speak with Eric Holder, who served as the 82nd Attorney General of the United States from 2009 to 2015.

Holder shares his perspective on the proper functioning of the Department of Justice, the balance between independence and political accountability, and a distinction between the role of the Attorney General as the chief prosecutor on the one hand and as legal advisor to the president, and sometimes to the National Security Council, on the other. He also remembers his own experience with congressional oversight and gives a frank assessment of how oversight is functioning today. He also critiques the two OLC opinions against indicting a sitting president, and he offers predictions about the Mueller report and his own upcoming decision on whether he will run for president.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Former Attorney General Eric Holder seems to think Donald Trump is about to get indicted

As it’s become more clear over the past year or two that Donald Trump would eventually be exposed in several felony scandals, numerous media pundits have insisted there was a binding Department of Justice policy preventing a sitting president from being indicted. But as Palmer Report has been pointing out the entire time, this was never anything more than a stray forty year old memo that never carried any legal weight. Now a former U.S. Attorney General is confirming that Palmer Report is correct.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder stated on Twitter this evening that “A sitting President can be indicted.” So why is this a big deal? As the former head of the Department of Justice, Eric Holder knows full well what does and does not qualify as precedent and/or policy at the DOJ.

Not only is Holder casting doubt on the legitimacy of the supposed policy that a sitting president can’t be indicted, he’s taking it further by flat out stating that a sitting president can be indicted. Holder is also well aware, that as a former U.S. Attorney General, his opinion on this matter carries a whole lot of unofficial legal weight.

The question of course is why Eric Holder is making a point of publicly weighing in on this issue right now. He appears to believe that question at hand, whether or not Donald Trump can be indicted while he’s still in office, is on the verge of no longer being a mere hypothetical. Michael Cohen is about to publicly expose more of Trump’s crimes tomorrow. Is Holder expecting an SDNY indictment against Trump thereafter?

‘I’m going to let the American people decide exactly who’s telling the truth,’ Donald Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen told reporters after giving testimony before a closed Senate intelligence committee. 1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Roger Stone has berserk meltdown, and he probably just finished himself off

In the five days since Roger Stone was hit with a comprehensive gag order for threatening a federal judge, he’s been behaving surprisingly well in public. No one expected it to last, of course, and now he’s already reverting to his old ways. In fact his latest antics suggest that he’s all but begging the judge to revoke his bail and throw him in jail.

The judge told Roger Stone that while he was allowed to use social media to declare his innocence, he was not allowed to comment on any aspect of the criminal case against him, or the overall Robert Mueller investigation. At the time, Palmer Report pointed out that if Stone posted a specific article about his case and then he attacked that article, he would be commenting on the specifics of the case by default. So guess what he’s doing now?

Stone seems to think he’s found a clever way around this on Instagram. He posted a quote from Mark Twain which generically attacks the media. Okay, this by itself was probably allowable under the terms of his gag order. But then he couldn’t help himself, and he added these hashtags: “#cnnfakenews #cnnstoplying #cnnlies #maggots #goblins #demons #DonLemonsuckslemons”

In other words, Roger Stone just disputed what CNN’s Don Lemon reported on-air last night about the Mueller probe. Sure, he can try to claim that he was actually talking about some other story by Lemon. But the threshold for his bail being revoked isn’t proof beyond a reasonable doubt; the judge simply has to conclude that, in her judgment, he’s acting in bad faith with regard to the gag order.

Roger Stone seems intent on inching further and further up against the line. He’s also attacking Congressman Eric Swalwell, who sits on one of the committees tasked with investigating the Trump-Russia scandal. Stone may think he’s being clever here, but the judge is going to drop the hammer on him if he keeps it up – and knowing him, he’ll definitely keep it up.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Republicans in Congress hit the panic button, begin voting against Donald Trump

This evening the House passed a resolution to reject “president” Donald Trump’s “emergency” declaration. What will happen with this resolution in the Senate? If the resolution receives 51 votes in the Senate, it goes to Trump’s desk, where we all know he will immediately veto it. It is unlikely that enough votes will be secured to override Trump’s veto, but for him, the damage will be done.

As reported earlier, both Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski have indicated that they will vote for the resolution to pass. On Monday, Thom Tillis (R-NC) indicated that he will join Collins and Murkowski, leaving only one more Senate Republican vote needed to thoroughly rebuke and embarrass Trump. Interestingly, Tillis is using President Obama’s time in office to vote against the resolution. According to Politico, he said “There is no intellectual honesty in now turning around and arguing that there’s an imaginary asterisk attached to executive overreach – that it’s acceptable for my party but not thy party.” Wow. An honest Republican — at least one unlike Mitch McConnell, who seems to have forgotten all the blocking he did when President Obama was in office.

While Tillis has been willing to publicly support his rebuke of “president” Trump, some others continue to waffle, even though they disagree with Trump’s declaration. Those who spoke out publicly against the declaration prior to it being made are Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mitt Romney (R-UT), and Roger Wicker (R-MS), who thinks the “emergency” is “bad law” according to the Huffington Post. None of them have said yet if they will support the resolution. Of course, the die-hard Trump bootlickers stand firm, including John Cornyn of Texas and Chuck Grassley of Iowa.

Either way this goes, I find it very interesting that some of the Republican Senators appear to be growing some you-know-whats and are speaking up for their constituencies (for a change). Even if this is a short-lived bipartisan endeavor, the ramifications could loom large for Trump. This should signal to him that not everyone is willing to just silently go along with his nonsense, and he does not have control over his party members.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Nancy Pelosi goes after Matt Gaetz over witness tampering

Earlier this evening, when Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz used his Twitter account to try to intimidate Michael Cohen out of publicly testifying before Congress tomorrow, Palmer Report predicted that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi would quickly drop the hammer on him. Sure enough, Pelosi is already going after Gaetz.

For reference, Matt Gaetz posted this astounding tweet: “Hey @MichaelCohen212 – Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot.”

Nancy Pelosi posted this in response: “I encourage all Members to be mindful that comments made on social media or in the press can adversely affect the ability of House Committees to obtain the truthful and complete information necessary to fulfill their duties. As a result, such statements can be considered as not reflecting creditably on the House, and the committee on ethics should vigilantly monitor these types of statements, which may not be protected by the speech or debate clause.” So what is Pelosi really saying here?

In short, Speaker Pelosi just asked the House Ethics Committee to launch an investigation into Matt Gaetz over his witness tampering. Of course this is just what we’re seeing publicly. The House can also refer Matt Gaetz for criminal investigation. Prosecutors such as Robert Mueller or SDNY can also indict Gaetz and put him on trial. Members of Congress are not immune from criminal indictment and arrest, as evidenced by the recent indictments of GOP Congressman Chris Collins and Duncan Hunter.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Looks like GOP Congressman Matt Gaetz just got himself rung up for felony witness tampering

Donald Trump’s former longtime fixer Michael Cohen is set to publicly testify before Congress tomorrow about Trump’s life of crime. Trump has previously made public threats against Cohen’s family in an effort to intimidate him out of testifying, but after Speaker Nancy Pelosi made clear that she’d nail him if he tried it again, Trump has gone quiet about Cohen. Yet now one of Trump’s close House GOP allies has just committed one of the most brazen acts of witness tampering we’ve ever seen.

Here’s what Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz tweeted today at 4:12pm eastern time: “Hey @MichaelCohen212 – Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot.” Wow. We have no idea what Gaetz is referring to here, and whether any of it’s true. But make no mistake – this tweet is a felony, and it’s the kind you generally go to prison for. Assuming he ends up deleting it, here’s a screen capture:

Here’s the thing. The only reason Donald Trump hasn’t yet been indicted and arrested for his witness tampering tweets is that he’s able to hide behind the office of the presidency. We’re not saying he won’t be indicted in the end; it’s just that it’s complicated. However, members of Congress have no such protections to hide behind. We can guarantee that Pelosi is preparing to make a criminal referral against Matt Gaetz as we speak, even as Robert Mueller and his prosecutorial allies work on an indictment.

Matt Gaetz just ended his political career with this tweet, whether he knows it yet or not. It’s felony witness tampering, right there in the open. Gaetz must have seen Trump doing it and thought he could get away with it it too. Gaetz is severely mistaken. The only question is whether he’ll do prison time for this tweet, or whether he’ll be able to cut a resignation deal that doesn’t include prison time.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Vladimir Putin’s plan for world domination advances

For those of you who have heard the word “Brexit” and wonder what it is, permit me to give you a brief précis. Brexit is a portmanteau for “British Exit,” the exit of Britain from the European Union. The European Union is a confederation of 28 nations devoted to a single market trade alliance between members. The European Union is therefore an economically advantageous and powerful entity that Britain would be, and apparently is, insane to want to leave.

But when it comes to feeding that irrational animal called bigotry, it would seem no price is too great to pay, as Americans know only too well thanks to their disastrous “president.” And bigotry, in this case xenophobia fuelled by Russian propaganda, is what drives Brexit, and Brexit was narrowly approved by a public vote — a vote that was covertly influenced by Russian hackers — in the summer of 2016.

It should therefore come as no surprise to you that Barack Obama was opposed to Brexit, and Donald Trump was and is in favor of it. At least, that’s what Trump’s puppet master, Vladimir Putin, told Trump to be. And like the willing clown that he is, Donald Trump was only too happy to oblige.

Why does Putin want Brexit? For the same reason he wants Trump. Putin understands what weakens an enemy and that understanding is as ancient as Philip II of Macedonia, father of Alexander the Great, who some 2300 years ago advanced the notion of “Divide and conquer.”

With America in turmoil thanks to Trump, and Europe significantly weakened thanks to Brexit, Putin’s grand plan of world domination is well in hand. Putin, a megalomaniacal torturer and murderer, thinks he will live forever, or a reasonable proximity of forever, as witness his carefully cultivated rough and tumble outdoorsy image. Long enough, in any case, to realize his dream of being the first human to truly own the world. And as insane as this may seem as an ambition, it is almost certainly Putin’s ambition.

Like it or not Putin is still a powerful influence in America. Putin will try to rig the outcome of the 2020 election for Trump, or whoever his next disposable puppet turns out to be. As he puts it in “Winter is Coming,” former world chess champion Garry Kasparov writes, “Putin’s Russia is clearly the biggest and most dangerous threat facing the world today.”
