Michael Novakhov – SharedNewsLinks℠: Trump Exaggerated His Wealth in Bid for Loan, Michael Cohen Tells Congress

Michael_Novakhov shared this story .

But the documents provide a glimpse of values Mr. Trump assigned to some of his properties that are out of line with other available estimates.
[The testimony could create more legal issues for the president.]
On his 2012 balance sheet, Mr. Trump described an estate he owns in Westchester County, N.Y., as being worth $291 million. He bought the property, Seven Springs, in 1996 for $7.5 million. In 2018, Mr. Trump said in a federal ethics filingthat the property was worth no more than $50 million.
Also in 2012 — just as the economy was beginning to recover from the financial crisis — Mr. Trump valued his skyscraper at 40 Wall Street in Lower Manhattan at $527 million. An article in The Wall Street Journal that year reported that property had a value of about $400 million, based on sales of comparable properties. It would be three more years until the building achieved Mr. Trump’s valuation, according to Trepp, which tracks commercial real estate lending.
The 2012 Journal article also estimated that Mr. Trump’s golf resorts and related real estate in the United States and Scotland were worth nearly $1.6 billion. The Bloomberg Billionaire’s Index as of this week valued those properties at $650 million.
In the 2013 financial statement, Mr. Trump said that $4 billion of his nearly $9 billion net worth was attributable to his “brand value.” He did not report such a hard-to-measure asset in 2011 and 2012.
The financial statements for 2011 and 2012 carry the heading “compilation reports,” which in accounting terms means that the accountants that prepared them merely compiled information from their client without auditing the underlying figures. The 2013 statement does not appear to have been prepared by an accountant, and includes language that is not part of generally accepted accounting principles.
[Mr. Cohen characterized the president as a con man, a cheat and a racist.]
Determining the value of huge pieces of real estate is an exercise in subjectivity. In Mr. Trump’s case, according to bankers who have worked with him, he tended to make assumptions that were more aggressive than others in the real estate business would. For example, they said, he often made unrealistic forecasts about how much revenue he expected a property to generate, a practice that would result in a greatly inflated value for that asset.

Michael_Novakhov shared this story from “Hapsburg Group” – Google News.

M.N.: This is a very important story. It confirms my impressions, formed earlier, that the Orthodox Judaism in general, and its various offshoots , such as “Chabad Lubavitch” and other “Hasidic movements“, just like the State of Israel itself (God bless it), are nothing less and nothing more than the creations of the Abwehr and the New Abwehr (after WW2), which themselves were and are predominantly half or part Jewish, especially in their “top heavy” leadership circles, including Canaris himself and most of his commanding officers, as exemplified by this particular one described in this article

It was a historically formed and a historically determined circumstance: the ethnically German junkers looked down upon the Intelligence work which, as they felt, was not compatible with their ideal of the “honest military service”, and they gladly or by necessity gave this area to the Jews and part Jews to manage. Another half of this formula might have been in the objective military observations that the smart, creative, ambitious, and quite German-wise patriotic Jews were simply much better and more efficient in this area, and they accepted and practiced this observation as the rule of their science and arts of wars and espionage.

For the half and part Jewish Abwehr officers this “half and half” became their ideal and their elaborate “philosophy“: the fusion of the Germanic and the Hebrew Spirits and their best embodiment and representations (in the high Abwehr officers, of course).

It also included the criteria for the personnel selection; most of the Abwehr high officers do LOOK half or part Jewish

This point is very important for the understanding of the Abwehr’s and the New Abwehr’s psychology, outlook, and the nature, the character, and the distinguishing, the “diagnostic” features of their operations

The New Abwehr apparently, influences and manipulates the Orthodox Judaic movements, especially their pet project, the “Chabad Lubavitch” and other “Hasidic movements” quite heavily and almost absolutely invisibly, masking and advertising their “Putin connection” as the quite efficient, convenient, and convincing cover.

These issues need the sophisticated and in-depth research.

With regard to Trump Investigations, this assumption, or the working hypothesis, as described above, has the direct bearing and is a factor in understanding the Sphinx The Regent Jared Kushner, his family, their origins, and the origins of their wealth

The so called “Bielski Partisans” absolutely could not exist, function, and survive (quite nicely, with the trainloads of the robbed Nazi Gold and jewelry, which they later invested in the US real estate and other successful business ventures-rackets) without the overt or tacit approval and consent from the Abwehr which controlled everything on the occupied territories

The Kushner Crime Family was the tool: kapos and the enforcers for the Abwehr. They became their money launderes and money managers after the WW2, when Abwehr moved them to the US

The Trump Crime Family was the long term Abwehr assets, starting from Frederich Trump, Donald’s grandfather, who run the bordellos for them, and including Fred Trump, Donald’s father who built the “economy” housing for the newly arrived Abwehr agents, mixed into the mass of the legitimate refugees, and who also became the money launderer and the money manager for the Abwehr and the New Abwehr

Recently they (the New Abwehr planners) decided to merge these two families into a singleTrump-Kushner Crime Family, in what was clearly the arranged marriage between Jared and Ivanka, in preparation and as the first step towards Operation Trump
It was helped, as the apparent second step in this arrangement, by Wendi Deng the “Chinese spy”, as alleged and circulated by Rupert Murdoch, her husband at the time. Both of them, just as, hypothetically, the FOX News Corporation were (and are?) heavily influenced by the New Abwehr. For Murdoch this proclivity apparently also runs in a family.  This is the apparent pattern of this prudent way of family recruitment; universally, and for the Abwehr in particular.

This aspect is also important for the understanding of the role that Felix Sater and his “Chabad” sect played in the “Trump – Russia Affair“.

This thesis about the connection between the Orthodox Judaism and Abwehr is also consistent with the “Abwehr Diagnostic Triad” which was formulated by me earlier, as consisting of:

  1) Judeophobia (as the psychological product of these described above circumstances: the Abwehr half Jews were the GOOD (half) JEWS, all the rest were “very bad, sick, and contaminating” Jews),

2) Homophobia (the so called “Internalized Homophobia“, stemming from the personal aspects of the Abwehr leadership and reflecting the general, very permissive attitude towards homosexuality among the German military circles before and especially in the aftermath of the WW1), and

3) the specific Austrophobia or the so called Anti-Austrian sentiment (distrust and hate of all things Austrian), which stems from the Austro – Prussian War of 1866 and from the Austria–Prussia rivalry.

In the “Trump Affair”, the Austrophobia aspect is expressed by the New Abwehr planners in the concept of the “decadent and dishonest, not to be trusted”, part Jewish, Hapsburg Group, and this circumstance can be viewed as the particularly “telling”, or highly suggestive and indicative, “pathognomonic“, of the Abwehr operations.

Negotiations between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un broke down on Wednesday after both sides failed to agree on conditions for relieving U.S. sanctions, reports the New York Times.

Trump defended Kim’s involvement in the death of University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier, who died in 2017 after being returned to the United States in a coma following detention in North Korea, according to the Washington Post. “He tells me he didn’t know about it, and I take him at his word,” Trump said of Kim.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said his government would release an Indian Air Force pilot shot down over Kashmir earlier this week, in a sign that the crisis in the disputed territory may diffuse, according to the Times.

Israel’s attorney general announced three indictments against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for bribery, fraud and breach of trust, according to Haaretz.

Michael Cohen, the former personal lawyer for President Trump, returns to Capitol Hill on Thursday to testify in a closed session before the House intelligence committee, reports the Post.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Donald Trump | The Guardian: Trump was out of his depth in Hanoi. This failure is his greatest flop yet | Simon Tisdall

The blunderer-in-chief has let North Korea’s dictator emerge unscathed over his regime’s appalling human rights abuses

Donald Trump’s self-reverential style of personalised, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants diplomacy just crashed and burned in Hanoi. It is fitting, perhaps, that Vietnam – scene of past American humiliations – was the setting for the blunderer-in-chief’s greatest flop. Trump tried to wing it in nuclear talks with North Korea’s more canny leader, Kim Jong-un, and got what he deserved: precisely nothing. The summit, like last year’s effort in Singapore, was a Trump vanity project – and proved a labour in vain.

In principle just about everybody, including close neighbours South Korea, China and Russia, would like to see North Korea’s nuclear arsenal brought under international supervision, and preferably eliminated altogether. To make such a mess of things, given this exceptional consensus, is a true measure of Trump’s incomparable incompetence. Yet this is barely a surprise. It is entirely of a piece with his amateurish approach to key foreign policy challenges the world over.

Michael Cohen’s testimony may be horrifying but it is not shocking. The president’s supporters know exactly what he is

Shortly before November’s midterm elections I interviewed a Donald Trump supporter, coming out of a debate between three local candidates in a congressional race, asking how she felt about the president’s attitude to women. “I need to see the facts and the actual documentation,” she said. “I can’t just do all this hearsay.”

“What about when he says he personally grabs women and kisses them,” I prodded. “That was him saying that.”

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Donald Trump | The Guardian: Cohen’s devastating testimony lays Trump’s depravity bare | Heather Cox Richardson

How long will Republicans continue to defend the president, as evidence of White House criminality mounts?

The context of Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen’s testimony before the House oversight committee on Wednesday was more important than its content. Cohen established what was already widely suspected: that the president is accused of committing crimes. But the hearing did something else, too: it revealed to a television audience the utter bankruptcy of Trump’s Republican party at the very moment that Republican senators must choose whether or not to uphold Trump’s extraordinary assumption of power under his 15 February declaration of emergency.

Until now, it has been difficult to know what was really going on in the Trump White House. Special counsel Robert Mueller, who is charged with investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election but who has uncovered a number of other potential crimes, operates in impressive silence. The grand jury indictments that have produced guilty pleas from Trump’s former campaign chair, his national security adviser, and a slew of other operatives are often confusing.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Just Security: The Seven Step Program for Fighting Disinformation

After nearly two years of investigation by Congress and the Department of Justice, there’s no longer any serious dispute that Russia and other unfriendly state actors are exploiting social media, hoping to fracture Western democratic institutions and social cohesion. The question is only to what extent it’s working. But whether you believe that Russian exploits shifted the outcomes in the United Kingdom’s Brexit referendum or the 2016 U.S. presidential election is, oddly enough, beside the point. The hard fact is, these disruptive efforts are certain to continue, and state-level adversaries will only up their game and push harder for successful outcomes as time goes on. Neither state-actor trolls nor would-be domestic propagandists will be going away anytime soon.

That’s why a comprehensive response-and-deterrence strategy is critical. One of us (DiResta) is a technical researcher, and the other (Godwin) is a civil-liberties lawyer, but we’re both committed to democracy and to cybersecurity. We also share the conviction that it’s time to come up with a bold, full-spectrum strategy for addressing and mitigating information operations, and that the public needs to participate in this conversation. So that’s why we’ve decided to present our plan—Seven Steps for Fighting Disinformation—to proactively prepare for the next wave of social-media and internet-based psychological operations.

The seven steps can be summarized as follows:

  1. Move past blame, and look ahead to solutions
  2. Define disinformation as a cybersecurity issue, not a content problem
  3. Specify protections for the rights to free expression and privacy
  4. Create multistakeholder mechanisms for sharing threat information effectively
  5. Establish a fiduciary framework to promote platform ethics and user well-being
  6. Establish an oversight body (or bodies) to identify disinformation problems and strategic solutions
  7. Backstop all this with civil and criminal deterrence strategies

Our First Step is simple: move past blame. Yes, the tech platforms screwed up in 2016. Yes, our media institutions got played. Our government institutions failed to recognize the full scope of the disinformation problem. But ultimately, the finger-pointing, denial, and defensiveness about past election outcomes are small-bore debates. Despite their shortfalls in 2016, the tech companies will have to be key partners in any comprehensive plan to handle disruptive social media propaganda and platform-based psychological operations. Addressing disinformation going forward requires unity and cooperation.

Our Second Step: classify disinformation as a cybersecurity problem. The problem with information operations isn’t just that they are unpleasant, disagreeable, or even false—it’s that their intended purpose isn’t to argue or communicate, but instead to destabilize and undermine genuine argument and communication. Even provable falsehood is no good as a litmus test. The most effective propaganda frequently contains seeds of truth; the truthful elements are incorporated precisely to immunize propagandistic communications from criticism. So truth policing and fact-checking can’t be this century’s Maginot Line. The goal of our adversaries is corrosion, not communication – they are working to create confusion, to make it feel exhausting to determine what’s true or what to trust.

No single state-actor or ideological group owns these tactics. Russia’s operation is the most widely-analyzed and publicly discussed, but it’s only one example of a wide-ranging collection of documented information attacks, scaled from the very large to the very small. What distinguishes today’s disinformation operations isn’t where they comes from, but how they’re executed: the systematic manipulation and exploitation of social network dissemination capabilities, often leveraging tactics used by spammers and malware creators. The tactics evolve rapidly, and new vulnerabilities emerge as platform features and technology change. That’s why we have to treat disinformation as a cybersecurity problem, learning to detect dissemination signatures characteristic of deliberate deceptions, distortions, and other intentionally disruptive measures.  A cybersecurity mindset doesn’t just enable us to spot problems—it also helps us craft solutions. This includes establishing ethical, industry-accepted framework for “red-team” methodologies to identify vulnerabilities, which will enable us to be proactive rather than endlessly reactive.

Our Third Step: Any U.S. anti-disinformation strategy has to be designed with preserving both freedom of expression and privacy as a top priority. Disinformation isn’t merely “speech we disapprove of.” We can’t let genuine differences of political opinion (or other kinds of opinion) become collateral damage as we detect and root out disinformation campaigns. At the same time, we also have to remember that bad actors will insist, disingenuously, that what we do to combat disinformation is censorship. To defang these narratives, addressing disinformation campaigns must be done as transparently as possible. Platform companies must inform the public about what we’re all doing to combat disinformation. Frameworks similar to the practice of making Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedowns publicly accessible (both individually and collectively) provide a good starting point. This would allow the platforms to demonstrate that any takedown is done with care toward protecting the right of the people to speak freely, to preserve privacy, and to associate with one another on the internet as well as elsewhere.

The first three Steps establish a common understanding of the threat. The Fourth Step moves us toward building tangible infrastructure for addressing the problem.  We must establish multi-stakeholder bodies to construct standards and promote clearly defined accountabilities and oversight. We already have good examples of dedicated, formalized multi-stakeholder structures for cooperation and threat information sharing between the public and private sectors–successful models like the Cyber Threat Alliance (CTA); and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) Multi-stakeholder Collaboration on Vulnerability Research Disclosure. We should build on these models, enabling government agencies and tech companies to share their evolving knowledge of disinformation tactics and defense strategies with one another.

The evolving nature of information attacks leads to our Fifth Step: platforms must agree to prioritize ethics and user well-being. Godwin has argued that the social-media companies should answer rising concern about disinformation and privacy breaches by adopting a standard, shared professional code of ethics in the same way that doctors, lawyers, and other professions are bound by law and ethics to do. Obviously, legislators and regulators can and should impose duties on the companies to be proactive in protecting consumer well-being and preventing the rampant spread of disinformation. The companies might reactively oppose these duties, but we argue they should instead embrace them. The more voluntary the companies adoption of “information fiduciary” duties is, the better—not only do we need the companies’ input to strike the right balance (and protect free expression and privacy), but enthusiastic embrace of a fiduciary role could also restore the public trust in the companies that prior lapses have eroded.

The Sixth Step is oversight—a necessary measure to ensure that platforms remain accountable. By ensuring third-party oversight with teeth, we can verify that tech companies are doing their utmost to manage and mitigate pervasive disinformation and manipulation in our privately-owned public squares. The integrity of their products is increasingly tied to the information integrity that undergirds our democracy. Because bad actors will develop new tactics and strategies as internet platforms continue to evolve, we must ensure that the tech companies are incentivized to remain proactive in assuming responsibility for addressing disinformation on their platforms.

To establish this oversight, Congress needs to come together in bipartisan consensus and take action. That may be a challenge—recent Congressional investigative hearings have exposed knowledge gaps and devolved into partisan bickering. But, reaching further back into its rich history, Congress also has shown its potential to overcome partisan division and pass targeted solutions. Among current proposals, we endorse the Honest Ads Act from Senators Warner and Klobuchar as a good first step toward regulating political advertising online to reduce the risk of manipulation. Senator Warner’s 20 Policy Proposals point the way to more measures with potential to clean up social media disinformation, protect user data, improve media literacy education, and make bots more visible.

But Congress can’t be expected to do all this alone. To restore integrity to our information ecosystem, we need strategic defense planning and deterrence frameworks in addition to private-public collaboration and platform accountability.

That brings us to our Seventh Step—the need for a criminal-law and civil-liability framework to establish deterrence. There are currently no direct and consistent consequences for running influence operations, and therefore no downside to attempting them. The sheer variety, scope, and range of actors makes the argument for a whole-of-government cybersecurity doctrine, with deployed tools to detect and respond to malign influence campaigns. We need to better align government resources to address what are currently asymmetric threats. At a minimum, the President should start by immediately reinstating a cybersecurity coordinator on the National Security Council.

We’re not claiming to have gotten everything right with our Seven Step Program for overcoming disinformation, but we hope to spark a conversation about how our new democratic media are being used to corrode democratic societies. Just as the widespread adoption of the automobile forced society to think harder about how to cope with accidents, traffic jams, and safety regulations, we need to plan deliberately, in an ongoing way, for how we will contain this downside to our new social communication infrastructure. And just as the United States and other countries have had to deal with domestic as well as foreign terrorists, we face domestic as well as foreign disinformation campaigns. This means we need to put aside partisan divisions and commit to a shared program of anticipating, responding to, and deterring the threat of deliberate manipulation campaigns.

We believe that we can build an effective response to disinformation without eroding or undermining fundamental values such as freedom of expression online. But first we must resolve—as experts, company leaders, legislators, judges, regulators, and individual citizens—to build it.

TRUMP-KIM SUMMIT

Talks between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Hanoi ended abruptly today after the parties failed to remedy the impasse over U.S. sanctions on the North. Trump blamed the breakdown on Pyongyang’s insistence that all sanctions leveled by the U.S. be lifted without a firm commitment to eliminating its nuclear arsenal, Jonathan Lemire, Deb Riechmann and Foster Klug report at the Washington Post.

“It was about the sanctions,” Trump commented, adding “basically, they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn’t do that. They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that,” Rebecca Kheel reports at the Hill.

“I am never afraid to walk from a deal,” Trump told reporters after the summit collapsed. However, the president would not close the door to future negotiations between the two sides, saying that “eventually we’ll get there,” Jonathan Cheng and Vivian Salama report at the Wall Street Journal.

“We had some options … at this time we decided not to do any of the options … we’ll see where that goes,” the president claimed at a press conference moved forward by almost two hours after the talks collapsed. The summit ended with a handshake, according to Trump, who described the talks as “very friendly,” Jonathan Allen and F. Brinley Bruton report at NBC.

Trump claimed that he and Kim had discussed the dismantling of North Korea’s main nuclear facility at Yongbyon during the talks. Kim was allegedly willing to shut down the plant, but sanctions relief once again remained the sticking point, Reuters reports.

Trump said he does not hold Kim responsible for the death of U.S. student Otto Warmbier, who was released and sent back to the U.S. in a coma in June 2017 after more than a year of imprisonment in the North, dying within days of arrival. “He felt badly about it … he felt very badly,” Trump said at the press conference, claiming the leaers had discussed the matter privately and adding: “he tells me that he didn’t know about it and I will take him at his word,” Jeremy Diamond reports at CNN.

“From what I feel right now … I do have a feeling that good results will come out,” Kim stated in answer to a question from a journalist as to whether he was “confident.” Kim’s move to directly answer the question marked “a stunning — and possibly unprecedented” move, Caitlyn Oprysko comments at POLITICO.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in described the breakdown of nuclear talks as unfortunate, but expressed hope that the U.S. and the North continue an active dialogue. The collapse of the Vietnam summit marks a setback for Moon, who had planned to announce new proposals for inter-Korean engagement, possibly including economic cooperation, in a ceremony tomorrow marking the 100th anniversary of a 1919 uprising by Koreans against Japanese colonial rule, Kim Tong-Hyung reports at the AP.

“Every effort was made in recreating the circumstances and ambience of Singapore,” Julian Borger comments in an analysis at the Guardian, noting that “like most theatrical reboots, the strain in keeping things the same in Vietnam highlighted the small way things changed.”

A selection of photographs from the Hanoi summit are provided at the New York Times.

MICHAEL COHEN HEARING

President Trump’s longtime personal lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen yesterday accused the president of a wide-ranging pattern of lies and criminality, laying out for Congress a damning depiction of life in the president’s inner circle. In his public testimony to the House of Representatives Oversight Committee yesterday, Cohen claimed that Trump lied to the public about business interests in Moscow, lied to reporters about stolen Democratic emails and told him to lie about “hush money” payments made to cover up his affairs, Peter Baker and Nicholas Fandos report at the New York Times.

Cohen stated that Trump “knew of and directed” plans for a Trump Tower Moscow, all the while stating publicly that he had no dealings in Russia. “At the same time I was actively negotiating in Russia for him,” Cohen testified, “he would look me in the eye and tell me there’s no business in Russia and then go out and lie to the American people by saying the same thing … in his way, he was telling me to lie,” the BBC reports.

Cohen alleged that Trump blessed the meeting his son Donald Trump Jr. held with a Russian delegation to obtain dirt on Trump’s presidential opponents in 2016. Regarding the organization of the infamous June 2016 Trump Tower meeting, Cohen claimed “there was nothing that happened at the Trump Organization … that did not go through Mr. Trump for his approval and signoff,” Philip Ewing reports at NPR.

“Don Jr. would never set up any meeting of any significance alone—and certainly not without checking with his father,” Cohen stated. He added that “what struck me as I looked back and thought about that exchange between Don Jr. and his father was, first, that Mr. Trump had frequently told me and others that his son Don Jr. had the worst judgment of anyone in the world,” Barbie Latza Nadeau reports at The Daily Beast.

Cohen also asserted that Trump knew in advance that WikiLeaks planned in July 2016 to release a batch of emails damaging to his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton. Cohen testified that he overheard a phone call from longtime Trump associate Roger Stone in which Stone allegedly informed Trump he had spoken by telephone with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and learned that the anti-secrecy group would be publishing a “massive dump” of Clinton emails within days; Cohen said he could hear the conversation because Trump had put Stone on speaker phone, and that Trump had responded “wouldn’t that be great,” Matt Zapotosky, Rosalind S. Helderman, Karoun Demirijan and Rachel Bade report at the Washington Post.

“He once asked me if I could name a country run by a black person that wasn’t a ‘shithole,’” Cohen claimed, citing a number of other examples of Trump making racist comments to him. The Daily Beast reports.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) clashed during the Cohen hearing over the allegations of racism, with Tlaib condemning as a “racist act” Meadows’ use of a statement by a single black woman in an attempt disprove the allegations of racism against the president. Meadows had invited Trump administration staffer Lynne Patton to the hearing to push back against Cohen’s allegations; Tlaib told the hearing “just because someone has a person of color, a black person working for them does not mean that they aren’t racist… the fact that someone would actually use a prop, a black woman in this chamber, in this committee, is alone racist in itself,” Jacqueline Thomsen reports at the Hill.

“He lied a lot …he lied about so many different things,” Trump stated in Hanoi at the close of his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un when asked about the Cohen hearing. However, Trump said he was “impressed” that Cohen said he had no evidence for collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia – although in fact Cohen did not unequivocally deny that such collusion had taken place, Jeremy Diamond reports at CNN.

WikiLeaks yesterday contradicted Cohen’s congressional testimony, sending a message on Twitter stating that “WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange has never had a telephone call with Roger Stone … WikiLeaks publicly teased its pending publications on Hillary Clinton and published > 30k of her emails on 16 March 2016,” Rachel Frazin reports at the Hill.

MICHAEL COHEN HEARING: OPINION AND ANALYSIS

Hearing Cohen’s allegations made openly before Congress “crystallized how extraordinary they are,” the Economist comments in an account of yesterday’s hearing.

Democrats are reportedly vowing that Cohen’s “marathon” appearance is just “the beginning,” foreshadowing intensifying scrutiny of the president’s businesses and his 2016 campaign’s relations with Russia. Courtney Weaver provides an analysis at the Financial Times.

“Even if those watching didn’t believe anything else he said … [Cohen] left no doubt that he is working closely with prosecutors in Manhattan’s Southern District in criminal investigations that could end up roiling the Trump presidency,” Ken Dilanian explains at NBC.

The most significant bombshell arising from Cohen’s written testimony provided to Congress ahead of yesterday’s hearing was the statement that Roger Stone informed candidate Trump in advance of Wikileaks’ release of the stolen emails – and Trump’s corresponding words of encouragement. Editor-in-Chief Ryan Goodman comments at Just Security.

“Tlaib is right: it’s racist to use a black woman as a prop,” Sophia A. Nelson comments at The Daily Beast in a rebuke of Meadows’ tactics at the hearing.

Roundups of key takeaways from yesterday’s hearing are provided at the Guardian, the Hill and the New York Times.

VENEZUELA

The U.S. is calling for a vote on a U.N. resolution urging “the peaceful restoration of democracy” in Venezuela – including free and fair presidential elections; unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to all people in need; and making clear its support for opposition leader and self-declared interim president Juan Guaidó. The draft resolution is expected to be put to a vote this afternoon, according to a council diplomat, but it is likely to face a veto from Russia, which backs incumbent Venezuelan President Nicolâs Maduro, Edith M. Lederer reports at the AP.

Guaidó has reportedly returned safely to Venezuela, where the government is threatening to jail him. Ryan Dube reports at the Wall Street Journal.

SYRIA

Hundreds of people streamed out of Islamic State group’s last enclave in Syria under escort from U.S.-backed forces yesterday, as part of an exodus of both the militants’ supporters and victims from its final patch of land in the village of Baghouz. Reuters reports.

U.S.-led airstrikes continue. U.S. and coalition forces carried out 199 airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria between Jan. 27 and Feb. 9. [Central Command]

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS

Eight panels representing prototypes of designs for President Trump’s long-promised wall at the Southern border were demolished in California yesterday. John Bowden reports at the Hill.

Taliban and U.S. officials holding talks in Qatar on ways to end the war in Afghanistan have held “extensive” discussions on how foreign troops could be withdrawn and on how to guarantee the country would not be used again by outside forces to attack other countries, the Taliban said in a statement released today. U.S. special peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad said in a message on Twitter that the meetings in Doha were productive, Reuters reports.

A U.S. delegation including Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner met Tuesday with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in the first known face-to-face meeting since the Saudi government’s involvement in the killing of Washington Post columnist and Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi. Katie Galioto reports at POLITICO.

Five transgender troops fighting to overturn President Trump’s proposed ban on trans servicepeople yesterday gave evidence to Congress, “making history with their moving testimonies.” Tim Teeman provides an account at The Daily Beast.

North Korean despot and US president’s wildly different perceptions exposed in Hanoi

Like many disastrous second dates, the collapse of Donald Trump’s summit with Kim Jong-un was made inevitable by the misreading of each other’s intentions at their first encounter.

Since their initial meeting in Singapore last June, Trump had become fixated on what he saw as a close personal bond between the US president and the North Korean dictator half his age. He told his supporters: “We fell in love … He wrote me beautiful letters.”

Before the start of business, Just Security provides a curated summary of up-to-the-minute developments at home and abroad. Here’s today’s news.

‘Who else knows that the president did this?,’ asked Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during her grilling of Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen. The Democratic congresswoman’s line of questioning seemed to be aimed at getting names of people who could back up Cohen’s testimony or further the investigation into Trump’s finances. ‘Who would know the answer to those questions?’ she asked, and, ‘Where would the committee find more information on this?’ By the end of her question time, Ocasio-Cortez had a list of names of people who could help uncover any potential financial misdealings of Donald Trump

Andrew McCabe’s Full Interview On Trump, Mueller, Comey & Clinton | The Beat With Ari Melber | MSNBC

From: Trump
Duration: 28:43

In a newsmaking interview with MSNBC Chief Legal Correspondent Ari Melber, former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe details a secret, never-released letter by Trump linking the firing of James Comey to Russia; explains what he thinks the “worst thing” Trump has done in office; previews the impending Mueller Report; discusses whether Rod Rosenstein wrote a misleading memo to justify Trump firing James Comey and — under persistent questioning — McCabe goes farther than he did in his book to acknowledge his own “mistakes” in the Clinton email investigation. Melber also presses McCabe on why he is now concerned about evidence of obstruction by Donald Trump, when McCabe testified to Congress, under oath in May 2017, that there were “no efforts to impede” the Russia investigation. (McCabe watches the clip of that testimony play during the interview before he responds.) McCabe also defends a major controversy: How the FBI sat on Clinton-related emails in the Weiner case during the 2016 campaign. Near the end of the extensive interview, McCabe fields questions on how the FBI views Julian Assange; whether Mueller was in the room when McCabe spoke to the Russia probe; Jeff Sessions’ approach to civil rights and consent decrees at the DOJ; when the last time McCabe spoke to Comey was, and whether the separate federal probe into McCabe’s own alleged misstatements to FBI investigators is still open.

Legal Nightmare: President Donald Trump Bracing For NY Feds | The Beat With Ari Melber | MSNBC

From: Trump
Duration: 07:44

“The Daily Beast” reports Trump is already asking his lawyers to stay on for months or years, far beyond the end of the Mueller probe to brace for the potential legal challenges posed by the open probes in the Southern District of New York. “Above the Law” Editor, Elie Mystal, tells Ari Melber “there is significant jeopardy up and down the Trump Organization” and while Mueller has “a limited scope” SDNY can investigate any crime.
