Palmer Report: Donald Trump has crazed late night meltdown after the House Judiciary Committee takes a blowtorch to him

Today, Donald Trump had the worst day of his life (so far) when the House Judiciary Committee targeted more than eighty people and entities connected to him, in what will merely be the first batch of evidence collection regarding Trump’s crimes. Also, Fox News got busted today for having conspired with Trump to rig the 2016 election. So how is Trump taking the news?

Right around 11pm eastern time, Donald Trump tweeted this quote: “We the people will now be subjected to the biggest display of modern day McCarthyism….which is the widest fishing net expedition….every aspect of the presidents life….all in order to get power back so they can institute Socialism.” Well, that was his second try. The first time around he typed “McCathyism” and it led endless jokes about who “Cathy” might be. But the surreal part is where the quote came from.

That’s right, Donald Trump was sharing the words of none other than his Fox News co-conspirator Sean Hannity. Of all the days when Trump shouldn’t be quoting Fox News, today was that day. Yet here he is, desperately clinging to the one host on the one network that’s the furthest up his backside.

This probably tells us all we need to know. Donald Trump isn’t hunkered down with his attorneys, trying to figure out how to fight back against the dozens of document requests that went out today. He’s not even spending his time trying to illegally convince the targets not to cooperate with Congress. Instead he’s lying in bed, watching Hannity, and mistakenly tweeting about someone named Cathy.

Palmer Report: Confirmed: the SDNY is criminally targeting Rudy Giuliani

Spread the Knowledge

On Friday, Michael Cohen said something during closed door hearings that prompted Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee to publicly categorize it as a game changer. Now we’re finding out what it is, and let’s just say that it definitely involves Rudy Giuliani, and it probably involves Rudy going to prison.

On Saturday, the Washington Post reported that Michael Cohen’s revelation to the committee on Friday had something to do with pardons. Now the Wall Street Journal is reporting this evening that after Michael Cohen’s office was raided, Cohen’s former attorney spoke with Donald Trump’s attorneys about the possibility of a pardon. In response, Rudy Giuliani told Cohen that Trump might pardon him down the road. This is felony obstruction of justice on Rudy’s part. This is a three ring circus, but there’s only one conclusion here: the SDNY is criminally investigating Rudy Giuliani.

Follow the logic. During Cohen’s public testimony on Wednesday, he revealed that the last interaction he had with Team Trump was a couple months after the FBI raided his office. When Cohen was pressed for details, he said he couldn’t go into it, because the SDNY is actively investigating the matter. Then on Friday he privately told Congress that after the raid, Rudy Giuliani dangled a pardon. So now we know that the SDNY is targeting Rudy over the pardon incident.

While it’s been clear for some time that SDNY is targeting various Donald Trump associates in general, this marks the first confirmation that SDNY is targeting someone in Trump’s current inner circle, for crimes committed on Trump’s behalf. It’s time for Rudy Giuliani to cut his plea deal, if he hasn’t already.

Palmer Report: The two House Judiciary Committee targets who can harm Donald Trump the most

Michael Cohen was known as a “fixer” for Donald Trump. But the real garbage collection people sweeping up behind the Trump crime syndicate are Hope Hicks and Rhona Graff. Both women acted as gatekeepers and Trump whisperers. There is very little they don’t know about. Their testimony and documents will be gold.

Hope Hicks was a clean-up gal, probably too young and dumb to understand the crimes she’s been involved in. Her alleged sweeping of emails under the rug and alleged lying to Congress have real-world consequences. For a rube like her, she probably always ran with the philosophy that if Trump says it’s okay, it will be okay or he’ll make it okay. In the private world of the Trump Organization, that worked for a long time. But as we’ve seen, this is a whole new planet. You do not mess with the American people. Americans have lawmakers and the judicial system behind them, and for the most part, they will follow the law. Poor Hope. Let’s hope she’s flipped.

But the real Mrs. Danvers in this Rebecca mystery has been Donald Trump’s personal secretary Rhona Graff. She has been in Trump world thirty years. She’s seen it all and probably has participated in more crimes as an accessory than we can name. Now with the added title of Senior Vice President of the Trump Organization, her goose is cooked. She can’t fall on the excuse that she was just an underling following orders. She’s got real involvement and she will do real time. Unless she flips.

Rhona has put in her time with Donald Trump. If she has a family, she should think hard and fast about what sacrifice she’s willing to make for Trump. She’s seen Manafort thrown in prison for life. Roger Stone, another longtime compatriot whom she must know pretty well, will be next. If she’s got an ounce of self-preservation, she’ll sing, and she should start in producing documents and in polishing her truth bone for testimony in front of Congress.

Palmer Report: Be worst: Melania Trump goes off the rails

Spread the Knowledge
  •
  •

The surreal FLOTUS initiative known as “Be Best” is back in the spotlight this week. Melania Trump is taking her public awareness campaign to Washington, Nevada, and Oklahoma, making stops at an elementary school, a tech company, and a town hall. She tweeted that she “will continue to help promote successful programs that provide children the tools and skills required for emotional, social and physical well-being.”

That all sounds great, but only on paper. The reality of Be Best paints a curious picture, starting with the name. “Be Best” is way weird. The missing article makes the phrase awkward, a sign of amateur hour in the East Wing. Many have wondered if the name is also a petty attempt to outdo Melania’s predecessor. In a conversation with Oprah Winfrey at the 2016 United State of Women Summit in Washington DC, Michelle Obama encouraged men to “be better.” The former First Lady’s grammatically correct phrase was met with thunderous applause.

Then there is the substance of Be Best, which is one gigantic elephant in the room. The initiative’s mission is to “focus on major issues facing children today,” such as “avoiding negative social media interaction.” But no matter how sincere Melania might be in her efforts, she has a credibility problem the size of Trump’s failed imaginary wall. She remains married to a proud orphan-maker who enjoys spending “executive time” tweeting insults to anyone who dares to challenge him.

Finally, there is the issue of Be Best’s bizarre promotion. Melania’s first public action since launching her campaign about children’s well-being was a trip to a children’s shelter in McAllen, Texas. The point was to show support for migrant children who were separated from their families thanks to the Trump administration’s policy. But Melania made the biggest headline with her “I really don’t care. Do U?” jacket, which literally speaks for itself. A few months later, she brought her Be Best initiative to Africa. Melania wore a pith helmet, which has come to symbolize colonialism and white privilege. Such shenanigans have no place in any serious public awareness campaign.

This week, Melania is taking Be Best on the road at a time when it is guaranteed to get little coverage. Mounting evidence of Donald Trump’s crimes and scandals have overtaken the news cycle. If Trump’s presidency is imploding, then Melania’s days as our nation’s First Lady may very well be numbered. Be Best may best be ending.

Lawfare – Hard National Security Choices: The Cyberlaw Podcast: NewsGuard Takes on Fake News

Our interview is with two men who overcame careers as lawyers and journalists to become serial entrepreneurs now trying to solve the “fake news” problem. Gordon Crovitz and Steve Brill co-founded NewsGuard to rate news sites on nine journalistic criteria—using, of all things, real people instead of algorithms. By the end of the interview, I’ve confessed myself a reluctant convert to the effort. This is despite NewsGuard’s treatment of Instapundit, which Gordon Crovitz and I both read regularly but which has not received a green check.

In the news, Klon Kitchen talks about the latest on cyberconflict with Russia: CyberCom’s takedown of the Russian troll farm during 2018 midterms. The Russians are certainly feeling abused. They are using U.S. attacks to justify pursuing “autonomous Internet,” and they’ve sentenced two Kaspersky Lab expertsto long jail terms for treason.

Gus Hurwitz, Klon, and Nick Weaver muse on the latest evidence that information intermediaries still haven’t settled on a business model. Amazon marketplace sellers will now have the ability to removewhat they deem counterfeit listings. Amazon has let the FTC discipline fake paid Amazon reviews. And The Verge has a disturbing article on the human costs of using human beings to enforce Facebook’s content rules. (The failure of Silicon Valley to get a handle on this problem is, of course, the key to NewsGuard’s business model.)

Finally, just to give me an excuse to link to this Dr. Strangelove clip, Gus tells us that not even our prosthetic arms are safe from IoT hacking

Palmer Report: The real reason Matt Whitaker just quit his brand new Department of Justice job

Spread the Knowledge
  •

  •
  •

Back when Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker was replaced by Attorney General William Barr a few weeks ago, it was announced that Whitaker had taken a new “senior counselor” job within the Department of Justice. Palmer Report pointed out at the time that this new gig was clearly an attempt at keeping Whitaker from cutting a plea deal against Donald Trump. Now, remarkably, Whitaker has quit the new job already. So what’s going on?

We can rule out the possibility that Matt Whitaker is bailing on the DOJ because he’s landed some better job, as NBC News reports that he’s now seeking out a new job. So we’re left with the reality that Donald Trump handed a cushy DOJ job a few weeks ago, and now Whitaker is quitting that job, ostensibly choosing to be unemployed instead.

There are only a couple plausible explanations here. The House Judiciary Committee has made clear that it’s actively pursuing Matt Whitaker for perjury, from when he testified a few weeks back. That’s a felony, and Whitaker can go to prison for it. But really, the committee would rather get Whitaker to cooperate against Donald Trump, than to lock Whitaker up.

So even as House Democrats are trying to use the implied threat of felony charges to push Matt Whitaker into flipping on Donald Trump, suddenly Whitaker has bailed on the job that Trump gave him in the hope of getting him not to flip. It sounds like either Whitaker bailed on the job because he has flipped, or Trump pushed him out of the job because he suspects Whitaker has flipped. Stay tuned; this story is just getting started.
