1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump’s Kid Rock incident on Mueller Weekend is even stranger than you think

Spread the Knowledge
  •
  •
  •
  •

By any definition this is Mueller Weekend, right? We’re all sitting around waiting to find out what Special Counsel Robert Mueller has said in his report. The media and the public don’t know. The Democrats and Republicans don’t know. Donald Trump doesn’t know. Everyone is spending the weekend differently. Trump is spending it in a manner that’s strange even by his usually incomprehensible standards.

It’s not just that Donald Trump has kept quiet during the thirty hours since Robert Mueller submitted his report. It’s that his only communication with the public came through – of all people – Kid Rock. Considering that Trump is in South Florida, and he nearly always golfs when he’s there, we’re not all that surprised that he was out on the golf course today. We’re not even surprised that he golfed with Kid Rock, considering the D-list celebrities he likes to periodically trot out. What we can’t figure is why Kid Rock tweeted the photo of the two of them on the golf course, and Trump didn’t.

Think about it. If Donald Trump’s team put together this silly photo op because it wanted to give off the outward appearance that it’s (lazy) business as usual for Trump, why would they then rely on Kid Rock to be the one to announce it? Are they that tone-deaf about how ridiculous this looks? Even if this photo op was merely intended to boost the spirits of Trump’s base, without regard for how anyone else might interpret it, doesn’t this come off as weak even in the eyes of Trump’s base?

On the other hand, if Team Trump decided that radio silence was the way to go this weekend, and it was important enough that they convinced Trump not to be seen or heard at all, then why did they allow Trump to pose for a photo with Kid Rock? Why did they not bother to tell Kid Rock to sit on the photo for a few days? None of this makes sense. Considering that so little about Trump makes sense in general, perhaps it’s fitting this his final hours before the release of the Mueller report are being spent in such bizarre fashion.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Palmer Report: Robert Mueller begins announcing the handoffs of his Trump-related criminal cases

Spread the Knowledge
  •
  •
  •
  •

Now that Special Counsel Robert Mueller has submitted his report and completed his investigative work, what happens to the ongoing criminal cases that originated out of his office? As it turns out, Mueller has already begun announcing the handoffs of his Trump-related criminal cases.

Robert Mueller’s office told CNN today that it’s handing off the Rick Gates criminal case to the U.S Attorney’s office for Washington DC. Gates pleaded guilty and cut a plea deal a long time ago, but because he’s been cooperating all along, he still has to be sentenced – and someone on the prosecutorial side has to handle those upcoming court proceedings. What’s interesting here is that when Gates is sentenced, the prosecution will need to file a memo detailing Gates’ cooperation. It’ll be public, except for any parts that relate to other ongoing investigations. But there’s more to this than just the Gates case.

Today’s announcement serves as a reminder that every one of Robert Mueller’s cases is either being handed off now, or has already been handed off. Michael Flynn hasn’t been sentenced yet. Roger Stone is still several months away from the scheduled start of his trial. Those cases will both be handed off to the relevant U.S. Attorneys’ offices. We’ll see more announcements along these lines, at least when it comes to the cases that are already in public view.

It’s also important to keep in mind that when Robert Mueller previously has handed off pre-indictment cases to other prosecutors, he hasn’t announced anything. For instance he handed the Michael Cohen case to the Feds at SDNY in secret, and the public didn’t find out the investigation existed until SDNY was ready to make the kind of moves that exposed the case to the public. For that matter, by all accounts, Mueller didn’t “recommend” to SDNY that Cohen be indicted; he simply handed them the case and let them make the decision based on the evidence.

So when we keep hearing today’s major media reports about Robert Mueller not indicting anyone else, and not “recommending” any more indictments, we’ve already seen Mueller send one of Trump’s people to prison without indicting him or recommending he be indicted. Even as Mueller publicly hands off his ongoing cases that are in public view, he’s also privately handing off any ongoing cases that aren’t yet in public view.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Palmer Report: Watergate expert says the Trump-Russia investigation is just getting started

Spread the Knowledge
  •

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has finally concluded his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, delivering his report to Attorney General William Barr last night. As we await the report’s conclusions and findings, it may feel as if we are about to learn the ultimate fate of Donald Trump and everyone in his orbit. But the reality is that only the Special Counsel’s investigation is ending. No matter what the report says, and even if no new indictments come directly from Mueller, the inquiries are far from over.

On CNN last night, Erin Burnett asked Tim Naftali, the former director of the Nixon Presidential Library, for his insight into the significance of the report’s release, especially as compared to the release of the final report in the Watergate scandal. Naftali’s answer was informed and insightful. He quickly dismissed the idea of a historical similarity between the Nixon and Trump reports, claiming that “this is not a parallel at all.” Naftali pointed out that the Watergate special prosecution force’s final report actually came out a year after Richard Nixon had resigned. “It was the end of the process, and right now we are at the end of the beginning of the process.”

Naftali went on to explain that during Watergate, Congress and the press did the heavy lifting when it came to investigating Nixon before a special prosecutor even entered the scene. With Trump’s scandals, however, “it’s the other way around,” he explained. “And so, if indeed there is more misconduct surrounding this administration, expect more investigations. They just won’t be led by Mueller.”

Given Donald Trump’s antagonism toward what he has insisted all along to be a “witch hunt,” it is amazing that Mueller made it to the finish line without Trump firing him. It is also encouraging to learn tonight that Barr revealed there were no instances in which Mueller’s “proposed actions” were denied for being “so inappropriate or unwarranted.” Hopefully, transparency will rule the day and we will soon learn exactly what Mueller found in his investigation. But as far as expecting a swift and just conclusion to all things Trump right now, remember that, as one leading Nixonian scholar just put it, we are only at the end of the beginning.
