1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Palmer Report: Sit down, Donald Trump, you didn’t “win” the Mueller probe

Spread the Knowledge

Even as Donald Trump’s handpicked Attorney General William Barr tries to fend off the inevitable release of the full Mueller report, Trump’s inner circle has apparently convinced him that this is all over, and Trump has somehow “won.” We know this because Trump just stood in front of the cameras and flatly declared “I won” when it comes to the Mueller probe. This guy is about to get hit with a harsh dose of reality.

Barr says he’s less than a week away from releasing a redacted version of the Mueller report. It’ll be a whitewashed joke, of course, with the very ugliest of Trump’s obstruction and collusion efforts conveniently blacked out for no reason other than that Trump wants it that way. But even Barr will have to allow some of the dirt on Trump to be released, if only in the name of trying to fend off having to release the worst of it.

In fact, the less Barr releases next week, the more emphatically Mueller’s team will begin leaking what’s really in the report. They can’t legally leak the classified parts, but they can leak just enough about the report to leave the American public with no doubt that Trump is lying when he claims Mueller found “no collusion” and “no obstruction,” and that Barr is illegally covering it up. Barr is holding his ground for now, but it’s slipping away from him, and it’s only going to continue to slip further.

So Donald Trump can gloat all he wants this week about how he “won” the Mueller probe. What is that supposed to mean anyway? This isn’t a game. Trump and his people conspired with the Russians to try to alter the outcome of the election in his favor, which means he’s not the “president” of anything. He’s a thug who’s illegally occupying the office of president, he’s abusing the power of the presidency to try to shield himself from his crimes, and he’s gloating about it like the pond scum that he is. But things are about to get rather bad for him next week – and they’ll only get worse for him from there.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (196 sites): Palmer Report: Donald Trump can’t even face what he’s done

Spread the Knowledge

Kirstjen Nielsen may be gone, resigning shortly after she humiliated herself by trying to defend the White House’s abominable family separation policy yet again, but the dark cloud of the Trump administration’s bigotry is more visible than ever. It’s beyond despicable that the current administration not only locked children in cages and defended it, but that it plans to do it again, even if it means openly defying the law.

Were Donald Trump anything resembling the strong leader he imagines himself to be, he would have at least taken the time to visit one of the camps where the migrant children are being detained, or where several have also died, when he traveled to the southern border last week for a plaque dedication to his racist wall. Nope, he was too worried about the optics, according to Nielsen. Perhaps to put it better would be to say that he’s worried too much about his strongman image, and his standing among racists, to act human for once.

Now that this sickening scandal has been brought to the forefront once again, largely by his own doing, Donald Trump is only growing angrier. You have to ask: what did he expect if all this time, he’s been encouraging officials to ignore the law? Perhaps he was expecting people to blame his predecessor, and that would be the end of it.

At a White House meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Trump once again brought up the claim that “President Obama separated the children,” ignoring how often this claim has been debunked. He claims to have changed the law with his executive order – another example of him saving the less fortunate from a crisis of his own design.

We’re talking about lives permanently altered because of this administration – and Donald Trump can only view the problem in terms of how others will see it. He can frighten his base by reinforcing their own bigotry against asylum seekers. He can pretend to solve the problem he created by signing an order. But when pressed on what his actual plans are, the times when he needs to present an idea and not perform, we see a much less secure side of him. It’s not enough for the media to heavily report on this crisis. Every day from now until the end of his time in office, people must ask Donald Trump publicly why he supports family separation – until he has no lies to hide behind.

Donald Trump’s Day of the Long Knives

In what was at the time justified as a preemptive strike against a possible coup, in the summer of 1934, Adolf Hitler ordered the murder of Ernst Röhm and several of his “brownshirt” lieutenants. The net effect of this purge was to rein in the more thuggish elements of Hitler’s regime and consolidate his power. It largely worked and the evening of 30 June, 1934 became known as the “Night of the Long Knives,” in commemoration of those brutal murders.

With Donald Trump ordering the termination of Kirstjen Nielsen and Service Director Randolph Alles, and with other DHS and ICE personnel also on their way out, it’s ironic in light of reflected history that Trump was motivated to take these actions because the personnel he’s purging, though thuggish in their own right, have not, by his lights, been sufficiently thuggish enough. Even so it might not be out of line to call Monday, the eighth of April, and events immediately following, the “Day of the Long Knives,” as a memorialization.

With John Kelly gone, Josef Goebbels lookalike and White House cockroach in residence Stephen Miller is the Svengali currently holding the lion’s share of Trump’s strings. Miller’s well-known toxic views on immigration (it was he who made sport of the “New Colossus,” poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty) are quickly becoming Trump’s too. These days it may even turn out to be dangerous in Trumpland to despise, with substandard zeal, immigrants and asylum seekers. Look for Insufficient Hate to become a fireable offense in the Trump White House soon.

I do not believe that history repeats itself, per se. I do believe, however, that certain identifiable patterns do recur. So apart from yet another tired Hitler dig on Donald Trump, and obvious comparisons of Trump sycophant and lapdog Stephen Miller with Josef Goebbels, what can be achieved by rechristening the eighth of April, 2019, the “Day of the Long Knives”? Only this. During Adolf Hitler’s second year of his rise to power, Hitler never once held in his mortal hands the power to destroy all life on Earth. In fact, he never did. Donald Trump holds two weapons of clear and present danger to the future survival of the human race: the largest nuclear arsenal ever assembled, and a complete disregard for the science of global climate change.

So let’s never lose sight of this chilling reality. Adolf Hitler, with far fewer weapons of far lesser power, and wielding the same simple, inimical bigotry that Donald Trump wields every day, still managed to massacre millions of innocent people, and very nearly destroyed the world. If christening Trump’s latest act of hate-inspired xenophobia the “Day of the Long Knives” reminds you of Trump’s potential to destroy us all, then I see it as a good thing. We need to stay scared.
