Once the House Republican leadership refused to take any action against violent lunatic Marjorie Taylor Greene, it fell upon the Democratic House majority to take action. Sure enough, they did just that tonight, removing Greene from all House committees. This played out as well as the Democrats could possibly have hoped for.
For one thing, in a half hearted last ditch effort at saving herself, Greene publicly admitted today that she was full of crap on a number of issues. So this pokes holes in her line of deranged conspiracy theories. But she also behaved just poorly enough during her speech today that the Democrats still looked 100% justified in cracking down on her, and the Republican leadership looked negligent for not having taken out its own trash.
Moreover, eleven House Republicans ended up voting with the Democrats tonight to remove Marjorie Taylor Greene from all committees. This gives the Democrats cover because it ended up being a bipartisan effort. But it also allows the Democrats to condemn Republican leadership for not having taken action. And it means that in the midterm elections, the Democrats can use tonight’s vote against the nearly two hundred House Republicans who voted to protect Greene and her violent lunacy.
The best thing for America would have been if House Republicans had joined with the Democrats to reach the two-thirds threshold required to expel Marjorie Taylor Greene. But since that wasn’t going to happen, this played out in the best way possible for the Democrats. The Democrats can’t control what the Republicans do within their own caucus, but they can make sure voters end up punishing the Republicans for their bad behavior.
